Hi.
I once heard that there was supposed to be a VR6 TDI engine for the 3C model, but the development was apparently discontinued.
That means there used to be one.
Can someone tell me why?
Ideally, with as much background information as possible, but not so much that you still have time to do your jobs .
Thank you.

'Mr. Winterkorn stated in the press that we already have a V6 TDI CR engine within the group, so we don't need a VR6 TDI; we can save on the costs, and for the other vehicles, the 4-cylinder engines will be available soon.' TDIs.
Therefore, the development was put on hold.

'Zyl.' translates to 'Cylinder' in English. I meant TDI CR, just to avoid any misunderstandings.

The 2.7-liter Audi engine?
Yes, 10 more horsepower that you don't really notice, but it consumes 2 liters more fuel.
Compare the values for the A4 (2.0 170 hp vs. 2.7 180 hp).
That V6 engine must be incredibly impressive to make someone go through all that trouble.

Or an Alfa, or rather an Opel OPC, with a twin-turbocharged 1.9 JTD engine.
Are you looking here?
http://www.autobild.de/aktuell/meldungen/artikel.php?artikel_id=14389
In the Opel, the engine produced 220 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, limited by the transmission.
The engine was operating at a very high temperature, so it couldn't be equipped with air conditioning, let alone a trailer hitch.
The OPC Vectra also did not go into series production.
Probably another reason why Alfa limits the power to 190 hp (for now?).
Best regards, Jochen.

The engine is available in the Saab 9.3 with 180 horsepower / 400 Nm of torque.
"ups" is also mentioned in the article... sorry.

It's kind of funny.
It looks like a waste and a VTG.
If I remember correctly, it's done like this.
That also makes sense.
The small variable geometry turbocharger (VTG) eliminates turbo lag. You can then use a 'cheap, durable' bypass turbocharger as a replacement for the original.
@ Matthias,
These are still the consequences of the old FIAT GM Powertrain marriage...
Best regards, Jochen.

I think it's likely based on the current 1.9-liter engine with 150 horsepower. Perhaps the twin-turbocharging will finally eliminate the terrible low-end torque issue that the 1.9-liter engine has.
It's annoying that the torque doesn't reach its peak until 2000 RPM.
Unfortunately, you have to pay taxes for a 2.0L engine because of its 1920cc displacement.
I recently read in the AMS magazine that the new A4 is expected to feature a 2.0-liter CR diesel four-cylinder engine for the first time, with a 170 hp variant. Does this mean that there will no longer be any smaller diesel engines? VW Golf III TDI Avenue, MKB 1Z, EZ96

"No, it definitely won't be called that. Usually, new generations of engines are introduced in the higher performance range and then gradually rolled out to lower performance levels. However, once the CR (Common Rail) technology is available, it will quickly be implemented in all VAG diesel engines. It's cheaper, and there are several model changes planned for the near future. I think there will be a version with around 100 horsepower... although the performance range is quite wide, keep in mind that the basic engine design could potentially handle anything from 90 to 210 horsepower." The 1.9-liter engine only manages to reach speeds from 90 to 160 km/h... which means it could ruin the performance of anything from a Polo to an A6.

@Turbolöcher,
I think we're being unfair to the engines; I suspect the 'turbo lag' is only due to the sluggish EGR system. In my experience, the 'lag' was always smoothed out when the EGR system was functioning properly. However, above 200 horsepower, turbocharging with a supercharger is likely the preferred option, as seen in engines like the 1.4 TFSI or the 35d.
@Martin,
I share your opinion; that's bad product placement. The only difference is the engine's configuration. (Remember the 1.8T and 2.6L engines, both with 150 horsepower, in the A4? People questioned what the point of that was.) If the 6-cylinder car at least had 200 horsepower. Who actually discontinued the VR and R engines in favor of V engines, and with what justification? There's really no good reason to build something like that, except for the lack of space in the engine compartment. *shrug*
I was just being sarcastic because VAG took forever to release the 170hp 2-liter engine.
Okay, I understand. Please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.
Above.

Why should that have happened?
"There has never been a VR Diesel engine, and all engines with more than 4 cylinders, as well as the Golf (3, 4, 5) and Passat (35i and 3C) models, use VR engines."
Apparently, someone in a marketing forum was afraid of "VR" and renamed it "V."

Yes. The costs.
Apart from that, the VR6 engine is mechanically a rather nonsensical design.
Besides the driving experience, there are no other arguments in favor of a VR6 TDI engine.
The well-known penchant for games has cost VAG a considerable amount of money, God knows how much.

Is the Passat R36 also a VR engine?
Yes, I also believe they won't build this thing as a diesel, because the supposed manufacturing advantage of having a single cylinder head would likely lead to new problems... besides, they're currently making a lot of money, so something like that wouldn't fit the bill, especially if 200 horsepower can already be achieved with 4 cylinders... smooth running or not, 6 cylinders are back... a diesel has to clatter, otherwise it's not a diesel (this is said by an ASZ driver who considers the high running smoothness of the 4-cylinder pump-injector at a night below -20°C to be absolutely acceptable and absolutely brilliant... you have to listen to where the engine is!!! )
