Symptoms:
When the engine is cold, the steering works perfectly fine. However, when the engine is warm, the power steering assistance stops working at low RPMs.
Cause:
Inside the power steering pump (image: view from behind the shaft), there are vanes that are pushed outwards towards the wall of the pump by centrifugal force (small red arrow) to pump the oil. In the area around the bearing (large red arrow), there were signs of wear between the vanes and the rotor, as well as between the rotor and the back plate of the pump. This was accompanied by a large amount of debris that jammed the vanes in the rotor, preventing them from being drawn outwards or only allowing them to be drawn outwards at high centrifugal forces. This explains why the power steering still worked at high speeds. Furthermore, the system definitely needs to be flushed to remove the debris; otherwise, you won't enjoy the new pump for long.
