Hello everyone,

I'm having another problem again.

I have a 1Z engine in my Caddy 14D.
I didn't do the engine conversion myself.
Problem:
There is a clearance of 5-10mm between the oil filter and the front crossmember.
To avoid having to partially disassemble the engine, I'm looking for an oil filter that is shorter than the original.

I'm not sure how long the thread on the flange is, but I need at least another 30mm.
Can anyone help me with that?

Of course, I would have to replace the smaller filter more often.
But what about the flow rate? Is there anything I need to consider regarding that?

I am grateful for any help.

Could you possibly sell it to me? Please quickly provide the OE number of the filter and the maximum length.

Post22-07-2008, 7:59    Subject: 1Z UFI Oil Filter - Short Quote

The OE size is 93.5 mm in diameter and 137 mm long, with a bypass of 245.
The replacement part has a diameter of 98.5 mm and a length of 116 mm, with a bypass of 245. UFI.
Please check if it fits, even with the increased thickness. With a length of 116 mm, you'll have 2.5 mm less space towards the front, which should be enough because it's angled downwards and screwed in from the front.
At the top edge, it is naturally 2.5 mm wider. The sealing area is located 0.5 mm further inward, but since the pressure comes from that area, it's not a problem. The maintenance interval is not an issue, as the filter area is approximately the same.
It is available for fast delivery.
I still have a thinner one with a diameter of 79mm, but it only has a 157 KP bypass.

Hi,

Why a different oil filter?

If you replace the oil filter flange with a water-to-oil heat exchanger with an oil filter flange that connects to a genuine oil cooler (from a Golf 1 GTI or Golf 1 TD), you can use the old oil filter completely. This significantly reduces the length of the setup, and the original filter fits. The oil cooler bracket is designed to be mounted on the front of the Caddy.

The only problematic part is getting this oil filter flange from a GTI. You can't buy it new from VW anymore, and parts from collections of G1 enthusiasts are now being sold for a gold price. icon_evil.gif

Hello,

First of all, thank you very much for your help.

@teileklausViewing profile: teileklaus:
That sounds pretty good so far, thanks.
Otherwise, I wouldn't experience any losses.
However, I'm not sure if 21mm of extra space will be enough.
Does anyone know how long the thread is on the flange?
I've had that in my memory for quite a while.
What are the consequences of the bypass pressure with the smaller filter?

@BertilViewing profile: Bertil:
"Good tip. I'll definitely look into it, especially since a smaller water cooler is already installed. I haven't really driven the car yet. Let's see how the cooling performance is."
At the moment, the effort involved with installing an oil cooler seems too much for me.
AUsserdem habe ich keinen Platz wg. RIESEM LLK.

@Hopel:
Da schau ich gleich mal rein. You're welcome.

Regards,
Nick.

Hello,

@BertilViewing profile: Bertil, you can forget about it, the flange doesn't fit on the engine block!

But the one from the Audi 80 with the AAZ engine should fit.
Alternative: No water-to-oil heat exchanger, but with an aluminum oil pan, e.g., from Schrick (with cooling fins). What are the opinions of experts?

Best regards,

The threaded rod doesn't need to be 30 mm long; I would cut it to the full thread length of the filter, which would also save about 15 mm.
It's worth considering the external oil cooler.
I wouldn't choose the Olfi with the lower bypass pressure initially, if the other one is available.

Okay.

I followed Hopel's tip.

The following official documents may be relevant for men:

W830/1: This model is 20mm shorter and was used in vehicles such as the Alhambra TDI with an 81kW engine.
"However, I find 20mm of clearance to be too tight. Since I have to destroy the old W840/2 to remove it, I need something that will definitely fit."

W920/8: This model is 44mm shorter but 6mm thicker. It was commonly used in many 1.9 D/SDI and 1.7 SDI applications.
If I remember correctly, the maintenance intervals for these engines are every 7,500 kilometers.

I think I'll start with the W920/8. I might also buy the W830/1 to try it out. I need to shorten the threads... I'll have to see if I can even reach them without disassembling everything. I really don't have much space. Ideally, the entire motor would need to be shifted back a bit.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

You're very welcome.

Regards,
Nick.

Why not?

I've already installed one on a 1Z engine. Even the seals are the same.

EDIT: You're right, it was from a Passat with the AAZ 053 115 417A engine.

Aluminum oil pan for the Caddy 1? Just make sure it doesn't sit too low. Otherwise, there's nothing to complain about.

Hello,

to have the right to do something once in a lifetime - happy icon_wink.gif

Nevertheless,
It's kind of strange that the Golf 1 from 1983 with the same front end design also came as a TD (direct injection diesel) with a water-to-oil heat exchanger on the oil filter, and now it doesn't fit anymore?

Best regards,

While that is correct, the 1Z model has the same water heat exchanger as the CY (51kW TDI), but a different oil filter.
The 1Z filter might be causing the problem.

What is the difference between the 056 115 561G (from CY) and the 056 115 561E (from 1Z)?

According to the MANN catalog, the CY (which is the TD) has a larger oil filter! icon_question.gif

D Height available

93.0 142.0 2.5 (W940/25 for CY)
86.0 139.0 2.5 (W840/2 for 1Z)

In my opinion, the "1z" seems to be positioned very far forward.
There's space in the back; in the front, there's 15-20mm of clearance between the fan and both the water pump and the radiator.
As I said: The 1z was already installed, and some of the brackets (at the rear and on the left) are more or less homemade.
I'll take some pictures for you sometime.
But it probably won't make that much of a difference.

Are you sure that the CY and 1Z filter flanges are almost identical?
Thinking back to my JR, it was smaller than the one from the 1Z. But I'm not going to swear to that.

Regards,
Nick.

Are the valves working correctly, and is the bypass pressure within the expected range?
I can find many results based on size and thread type.
The man with ID 830/1 would have UFI code 23 417 00.
and man 920/8 would be UFi 23 425 00.
I didn't find any information about the valves, check valve, and bypass pressure for either of them, and therefore I didn't recommend them!
Can anyone comment on this? It would be bad if the filter could partially drain overnight, and the engine would then knock in the morning.

What kind of motor mounts are installed there?
Your 1Z must be positioned very far forward.

CY:
028 118 417AD Filter Holder
038 117 070A Engine block gasket.
028 115 721 Oil filter adapter (the oil filter is screwed onto this).
028 115 723 Mother (holding the oil cooler onto the threaded fitting).
068 117 021B Oil cooler.

1Z:
028 118 417 Filter holder.
038 117 441B Engine block casting.
028 115 721 Oil filter adapter (the oil filter is screwed onto this).
028 115 723 Mother (holding the oil cooler in place on the threaded fitting).
068 117 021B Oil cooler.

The oil cooler, threaded stud, and nut are the same. Therefore, all the parts that come into contact with the oil filter are the same.

EDIT: The JR parts are completely compatible with the 1Z, except for the oil filter. The oil filter is then the one used for the CY model.

What about a gasoline filter?
They are thinner, but have the same connection dimensions. I don't have the other specifications readily available right now.
