Hello,
In my Golf TDI 66kW, manufactured in 1998 and with 67,000 km on the odometer, a portion of the glow plug has actually fallen into the combustion chamber, and according to my mechanic, this has caused engine damage.
Is this something that can happen? Do I have any chance of claiming compensation from Volkswagen or Bosch? Have I ever heard of something like this happening before?
Regards,
Jens.

Hi,
I've only heard of spark plug fragments causing problems in the pre-chamber of the engine so far, but even there, those fragments can cause significant damage. I wouldn't rule it out as a possibility.
Class action lawsuit against VW?
Defective, unless a manufacturing or material defect is proven.
Regression against Bosch??
Zero, you are not a customer of Bosch, but of VW, and VW is a customer of Bosch. Gruß Bertil

Hi Jens,
I just clamped the tip of an old, completely defective glow plug into a pair of flat-nose pliers and tried to break it off. It required enormous force to break off the tip .
I can't really imagine it like that .
What symptoms did you experience when the engine broke down? My sincere condolences .
Best regards, Christian.

Hi,
Soldering irons typically break when the ESD (electrostatic discharge) system is faulty and/or produces a poor soldering pattern.

Hello.

Hi Harro,
I could imagine that happening with mileage exceeding 200,000 km... but at 68,000 km, there would definitely have to have been knocking noises or something similar beforehand . And a material defect of that magnitude in the spark plug can certainly be ruled out.
I just want to make sure that the workshop isn't telling any lies to avoid honoring the warranty... For that, we would need more information from the author.
Best regards, Christian.

Hi,
You're right, that shouldn't happen at 68,000 km. However, anything is possible, and if it's a sporadic ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) issue that the driver might not notice, then it's at least a possibility.
greetings
Hello.

So, I last saw something like this about 10 years ago on a Mercedes /8, and it destroyed the piston, but nothing else. You could even still drive it .
