Hello!
"My Polo has been feeling a bit too unstable in corners from the beginning. It has the standard suspension, which has already been replaced (the shock absorbers). Now I've noticed that there are actually 3 different stabilizer bars for the front axle: 18mm (which is currently installed), 20mm, and 22mm. Would switching to the 22mm stabilizer bar (along with the necessary other parts) significantly reduce the body roll? Or would that not make sense? Otherwise, I don't want to sacrifice the comfort of the standard suspension."
Best regards,
Dirk. Audi A3 Sportback [8PA], 2.0 TDI CR [CFGB], STH mit FB

I replaced all the rubber bushings in the suspension of my car (front and rear) with BONRATH bushings. I also got two aluminum tie rods from a friend. These tie rods don't have rubber bushings, but instead have sealed swivel joints. So, everything is upgraded. Since then, the car feels very stiff. However, I also have an H&R coilover suspension. Combined with the stiff bushings and the tie rods, it's a dream to drive.

I believe it's beneficial to replace the stabilizer bars with stiffer ones, perhaps made of plastic. This would enhance the response of the stiffer stabilizer bars. In the uncompressed state, the impact on ride comfort should be minimal. However, when the body rolls during cornering, the progressive characteristic of the stabilizer bars (torsion element) eventually comes into play.
If it's worth the effort to you, then go ahead and try it, and use stronger stabilizers right away! Automobile Zeitzeugen: |SUZUKI Swift Sport (2008)| |Smart 450 (2002)| |Honda CB 125 F (2018)|

Despite its progressive effect, you should still notice a difference. As brezelmann01 mentioned earlier, he finds the soft suspension of the standard chassis quite pleasant, and the only thing that bothers him is the tendency to lean in corners. In my opinion, there's not much more that can be done if the comfortable suspension setup is to be maintained. Those who regularly drive on cobblestone roads, forest paths, or field tracks, or, for example, on the crater-filled roads of the capital city, might not want a very stiff suspension. I can at least understand that. Automobile Zeitzeugen: |SUZUKI Swift Sport (2008)| |Smart 450 (2002)| |Honda CB 125 F (2018)|

You can definitely tell that something is wrong, that's clear. But, as you mentioned earlier, is the effort worth it for him? MfG. Michael

Okay, those are some interesting points to consider! Where can you tell which parts are "harder" and which aren't? I'm not really familiar with suspension topics. Is this kind of thing only available in the aftermarket?

Yes, for example, Powerflex makes them, and they are blue. There are probably other manufacturers as well, but not VW. MfG. Michael

A comfortable and cozy suspension setup... sounds good.
In addition to their influence on handling characteristics, stabilizers and their combinations on the front and rear axles also serve another important purpose in suspension tuning.
You might want to research the influence that stabilizers and their coordinated combination of front and rear axles have on the oversteer/understeer behavior of vehicles in critical situations.
A "thicker stabilizer bar" at the rear, for example, means that the tendency for oversteer increases. If the rear axle isn't adjusted accordingly, it can have negative consequences.
Fortunately, there are systems like ESP (Electronic Stability Program) that can compensate for these errors to a certain extent. It all comes down to physics and logical thinking.
The company's engineers worked tirelessly for years on that.
Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest. Kfz-Prüfstelle des TÜV Rheinland/FSP Saalfelder Höhe in Thüringen im grünen Herzen Deutschlands.
