Hi everyone,
I need some clarification. I'm considering buying an A4, A6, or S6 as a station wagon, but I'm concerned because many of the vehicles for sale have Multitronic transmissions. I'm a bit worried about potential transmission problems.
However, I've now read that the Multitronic isn't available with Quattro all-wheel drive, but only the Tiptronic is. What's the difference between the two, and are Tiptronic transmissions more reliable?
Best regards,
Jürgen

That's not true. My neighbor has an A6 3.0 TDI Quattro with Multitronic.
Multitronic: Continuously variable, just like a CVT transmission.
Automatic with Tiptronic: A conventional automatic transmission that also allows the driver to manually select gears.
Multitronic with Tiptronic: Similar to Multitronic, but with the added ability to simulate virtual gears. This allows it to function, if desired, like a conventional automatic transmission.
Durability: The Multitronic transmissions sometimes fail, but not significantly more often than standard automatic transmissions. It also depends heavily on the engine it's connected to, and especially on who is behind the wheel. MfG. Michael

I'm planning to buy a gasoline-powered vehicle and then convert it to LPG. I need something with some power, as I'll be towing trailers, so at least 150 horsepower. As I mentioned, I don't want to constantly be repairing the transmission, so I was actually thinking of a manual transmission, but those are actually quite rare .
Best regards,
Jürgen

Well, at least when it comes to towing, I wouldn't necessarily opt for the Multitronic, because as a used car buyer, you're likely to already have a certain level of experience. Also, I don't think the S6 ever came with the Multitronic, because as far as I know, the transmission wasn't designed to handle very high torque. However, if you do a lot of towing, I wouldn't recommend an S6 either... but that's something everyone should decide for themselves.
When buying a used car, it's always important to know what happened to the car and how it was driven. A perfectly refurbished vehicle from a dealer doesn't necessarily have to be better than an honest private sale. Especially with larger Audi models, the mileage displayed on the odometer can be misleading, and it's quite noticeable how many vehicles of all ages have been clocked at just under 100,000 km.

I don't think so. As far as I know, Quattro models are currently only available with manual or Tiptronic transmissions.
Basically, it would be good to know what kind of A6 is being considered for purchase.
a6 4b or 4f.
In the A6 4B, the multitronic transmission often starts to fail before reaching 100,000 km; however, the TT5 transmission is also not particularly known for its durability.
The newer multitronics (like those in the 4F model) tend to last longer, just like the newer TT6 models.
If I frequently needed to tow heavy loads, I would opt for a Quattro model. Moreover, I don't like the "characteristics" of the Multitronic transmission at all, and the engines in Multitronic models are sometimes torque-limited.

I don't think so either. At least, according to the technical specifications of the a6 model that's lying on the desk, such a combination isn't available...at least not from the manufacturer.

And why does my neighbor have one, and there are at least 20 of them online? MfG. Michael

So, they don't have it on the website either... well, maybe it existed at some point. The brochure is dated February 2009, and I have no idea how up-to-date the information is online.
I'm not claiming to be right, but apparently, you can't buy something like that right now.

I suspect there are so many of them because most people are simply unaware of the difference.
Here's a quote:
"For all automatic transmission variants with..."
For front-wheel drive vehicles, the proven multitronic 01J transmission is used.
for use (CVT transmission).
...
For all automatic transmission variants with...
The new 6-speed automatic transmission will feature quattro all-wheel drive.
"Used for 09L."

Possible. But if you actually read the text from the link, it clearly states: "stepless automatic/Tiptronic transmission."
Furthermore, I can't think of any logical reason why front wipers with the Multitronic system should only be available for certain models, and not for Quattro models. MfG. Michael

"I think: There are differences in the clutch used for initial engagement... I need to look into it; I seem to remember reading something about it in the SSP (Service Information). With the Multitronic version, there was some kind of complex planetary gear arrangement that probably would have had difficulty coping with the initial resistance of the all-wheel drive... I'll search for it when I'm home; I'm interested in it now too. But even with all those, in my opinion, incorrect reports, your neighbor's experience is still relevant."
You know, for example, a Golf or a Passat is only available with 4Motion if you opt for the manual transmission instead of the DSG.

Which type of DQ transmission is installed there?
The diesel engines place a significant strain on the transmissions due to their high torque output.
Is it possible that the DQ350 is only available in smaller sizes, and not as a four-wheeled version?
Hmm, but the R32 also has 320 Nm... I just noticed that.
