Hello fellow forum members,

Today, I'm reaching out to you about a diesel engine that's not the usual type.

Ford Focus, manufactured in 2002, 66 kW / 90 hp, TD (Turbo Diesel).

Problem: Metallic squealing noise starting at 1400 RPM.

Ear localization, centered on the engine block.

Localization using a body sound probe: The tensioning roller for the V-ribbed belt is making noise.

-> Replaced the roller today, but the squeaking persists. The noise from the roller itself is gone.

The squealing noises cannot be located, even with a body sound probe icon_sad.gif.

What other methods are there for locating the source of the noise?
Or is anyone else familiar with this issue in the Focus Diesel?

Looking forward to more ideas!

Regards,

Faxes.

Is the timing belt, along with its pulleys and water pump, hidden behind a ZR cover? Perhaps it's worth looking there!

Hi!

Or try running the engine briefly without the belt that drives the auxiliary components.
When it's gone...

Good evening.

Thank you for the tips icon_biggrin.gif.

Here's the result:

Short test run without the serpentine belt, the noise remains. The source is clearly not the timing belt.

To test the exhaust system, I sealed the exhaust pipe, and the noise is still present when the engine is idling.
The engine won't stall, therefore the exhaust system has a leak.
Exhaust fumes are coming from the engine compartment, also visible on the exhaust manifold. It's likely a faulty gasket, and as the exhaust pressure increases, it makes a whistling sound, although it sounds very much like a metallic squeak.

Has anyone ever removed the exhaust manifold from a 1.8 TDI engine?

Regards,

Faxes.
