Hello everyone!
I'm having another problem with my A4 car, as mentioned in my previous post.
Background:
PLCC ICs were socketed and installed almost a year ago. They have been running for approximately 3,000 kilometers so far.
Until approximately 4 weeks ago, the AFN (Auxiliary Fire Network) was functioning perfectly. It was then switched off and remained idle for about 3 weeks.
After that, it simply wouldn't start anymore. The preheating indicator light remained off when trying to start the engine, and the glow plug control module (GPCM) was not accessible via VCDS (not found).
So, regarding that "Relay 109," which must be located somewhere in the electronics box near the water tank, I gave the latter a good whack, and suddenly the signaling system was responsive again. There were no errors in the memory (neither 01 nor 17!), and it started up as if nothing had happened...
Currently:
Since the brake hoses are currently being replaced, the vehicle is temporarily immobilized and supported by stands.
On this occasion, I wanted to take another look at relay 109.
Okay, I opened the electrical box and instead of finding the "Relay 219", I found something else. I removed it and opened it up, but I couldn't find anything unusual: all the relay contacts are perfectly clean, there are no solder joints that appear to be loose or could potentially break.
Reinstalled, started the engine, and by chance, I touched the engine control unit with the handle of the screwdriver, which caused a brief (attempted) acceleration at idle â AHA!
Each additional tap caused either a brief increase or decrease in the engine's speed, sometimes even leading to occasional stalling of the motor.
In some cases, the "background story" issue could be reproduced.
Without the engine running and with the ignition turned on, tapping the Engine Control Module (ECM) caused the ELAB/MSW of the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) to click.
VAT connector repeatedly plugged in and unplugged, contacts appear normal, no change to the above situation.
Then:
...and then it happened: The WFS lamp started blinking, the AFN either wouldn't start at all or would turn on for just 1 second and then go off again (meaning the WFS was active).
Okay, now I've connected VCDS and checked again:

The coding for the VAT (Value Added Tax) was suddenly altered, and the WSC (Worksheet Sequence Code) of my previous coding was replaced with the numbers mentioned above â for whatever reason.
Okay, so it's been re-encoded again, the errors have been cleared, but the last few errors remain in the MStG memory, and they reappear immediately after being deleted. The exception is that "incorrectly encoded" disappeared right after the re-encoding, but reappeared after turning the ignition off and on again.
The error memory in the instrument cluster could be cleared, but the warning light for the water pump (WFS) continued to flash. The next time the ignition was turned off and then on, the error reappeared in the instrument cluster's memory, the WFS light flashed, and the engine ran for 1 second.
VAT regulations expanded, disassembled, photos taken (see below).
Result: The PLCC socket was cracked, so I desoldered the base and reinstalled the IC without the socket.
"The MStG error has occurred again, and it's the exact same issue as before, including all of the above error messages."
The learning parameters of the AI or WFS (here: same address: 17) have been reset and saved. Now, the AFN restarts or runs for a longer duration, and the WFS lamp no longer blinks. There are no more errors in the AI's memory.

Engine starts and runs perfectly, but cannot be road-tested at this time.
Since the learning values in the AI were reset, the preheating indicator light starts blinking after approximately 30 seconds. All relevant diagnostic data can be read from the main control unit.
The VAT system or its related areas are now insensitive to "knock" errors, meaning input errors have been corrected.
My questions regarding this case:
- Is it possible that only the data within one of the other flash memories is corrupted, and that the checksum is now incorrect, but that this could be rewritten/reset using a procedure via VCDS?
- Or is it more likely, based on the error pattern, that only the PLCCs (due to data corruption/checksum errors) are damaged, and that replacing them would restore functionality according to the Material Safety Technology Act? I'm asking because I don't want to unnecessarily rework their solder pads for the 5th or 6th time - by the 7th time, I'll really need a new MStG .
Thank you very much for your tips and suggested solutions in advance!
Best regards from Munich!

Hello,
I would desolder the faulty socket, check/replace the memory modules, and then solder them directly onto the board. Alternatively, I could install a new socket.
Once the engine control unit (ECU) is working reliably again, we can address the issue with the coding.
The encoding is stored in a serial EEPROM (8-pin), and it's possible that the data content within the EEPROM has been corrupted due to uncontrolled resets during encoding or writing operations.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Rainer, and thanks for your reply!
Where is the EEPROM located, and could you possibly send it to me at the same time?
Best regards!

I thought you were an electrician? Are you sure you can fix the ECU without completely destroying it? The traces on the EPROM aren't designed to have things soldered onto them.
I would advise against attempting this without prior soldering experience.
The EEPROM is the only 8-pin component on the back. No, I don't have a suitable replacement part.
To be honest, I don't think it's broken either. Perhaps rewriting the code might help, but that would be relatively time-consuming without a suitable adapter.
Best regards, Rainer.

I have a hot air station and I'm a master technician in television technology, so I've done that before.
Regarding the (IÂČC) EEPROM, I don't have the means to write to it separately.
But first, let's test the new PLCCs .
Thanks again for your help!

If you don't have the component yet, let me know. I just sent you a private message .
P.S. Are you actually soldering the component with a hot air gun?
What temperature are you using for that?
It might be a good idea to run the entire circuit board through an infrared station with a controlled temperature profile afterward. This would ensure even heating and cooling.
Because if you heat certain areas to the soldering temperature, it creates stress on the circuit board. This is especially problematic with multi-layer PCBs.

Hot air works excellently. The serial EEPROM is likely a Bosch ZB M58258 @ 24C02, etc.
If you need some original content, I might be able to get it for you.

Hello everyone!
Thank you also to all of you for the help offered!
Even our (diesel) "Wiesel" sent me an informative private message.
@ voodoo :
Hot air temperature varies depending on the quality of the solder, the printed circuit board, the size of the component to be soldered or desoldered, and not least, the amount of (ion-free) air: approximately 420°C - 480°C.
On my Master's thesis, I once chose 460°C and a lower air volume so that the "flying debris" around it wouldn't be blown away.
@Mulle:
Well-typed: The marking on the (IÂČC) EEPROM is B58253.
But Rainer mentioned (via private message) that it probably works and the problem lies with the PLCCs. We're going to replace those first; Rainer is sending them to me.
After that, we'll try again if it still doesn't work.
Once again, thank you very much for your help!
Best regards!

Individuals with the 24c02 genetic marker are sometimes prone to developing Alzheimer's disease.
While they are supposedly designed for 40 million cycles, in my experience, they often fail after less than 100,000 cycles. And the older they get, the more prone they become to failure.
During my time at the large royal Dutch corporation, I processed 24c02 and similar chips in packs of 100.

Hi Bertil!
Thank you for your reply as well!
This aligns with my experience as a TV technician, particularly with Grundig chassis.
Whether it's a 24C02, 24C04, SDA26XX, SDA28XX, or any other similar device, there's always a risk that it might have experienced data loss or (unintentional) modification in the past â even if it appears to be working perfectly after being reprogrammed.
Normally, these cases of Alzheimer's were preceded by high-voltage arcs, which I would like to rule out in my current situation, and therefore I am relying on Rainer's experience .
...but if it comes to that, I can still replace the EEPROM.
Best regards!

Hello everyone!
The vehicle was tested on the road, and it was determined that the data stored in the PLCCs could be read and encoded without any apparent errors.
For example, when coding for a manual transmission, the control unit (ECU) code 14 can be read, which corresponds to the driving behavior. However, when coding for all-wheel drive, the driving behavior is also affected, but ECU code 14 remains blank. (Rainer is already aware of this.)
Given that there are still no starting problems and/or driving behavior issues (jerking, increased fuel consumption according to the MFA/FIS, etc.), I now interpret the flashing preheating indicator light as a definitive error in the data consistency of the IÂČC memory located on the back of the engine control unit.
In addition, the automatic speed limiter (GRA) is no longer working, which I consider normal given the error message "Engine control unit: Defective." However, the bits in the relevant memory module also no longer change when the GRA lever is activated (!).
Okay, let's wait for Rainer's PLCCs and solder them in first, then I'll let you know if that has changed anything about the error or not.
My Quattro will remain driveable until then, so there's no need to rush .
Best regards from Munich!

Hello everyone!
First of all, thank you very much to Rainer for his continued efforts to send me the PLCCs, which I received on Wednesday and have already soldered in (without sockets!).
Unfortunately, the result was identical error messages from the MStG (German Withholding Tax Act).
...which is something I completely overlooked: The GRA coding wasn't set!
I actually only came across this by chance, as I couldn't understand why the GRA commands weren't being processed in that particular system.
Here's a complete VCDS scan, either briefly or in more detail, including the actions I took.

As you can see, the "Incorrectly encoded" error message has now disappeared.
I am convinced that this would have happened even without Rainer's help, if I had figured it out sooner .
By the way, the preheating indicator light has not been flashing since the correct coding was applied (!), and the GRA (presumably a system or function) is working perfectly, including the statuses displayed in the control module.
What remains is this annoying error message: "StG defective!"
During the test drive, I only tested the VP1L encoding â and it showed no driving behavior issues whatsoever.
@Mulle: Can you tell me what the colloquial name for the IÂČC IC is?
@Weasel: Would it be possible for you to describe the aforementioned integrated circuit to me after I send you the corresponding dataset? *sweet smile*
Because I would rather not bother Rainer again, as he has already helped me with my "DBĂ€r-Defects-and-Complaints Thread" (*insider*) three times now, and each time it involved a significant amount of effort on his part without any desired compensation from me.
Regarding a detail that isn't necessarily critical: Since the last test drive, the coolant temperature gauge in the instrument cluster has been malfunctioning during warm-up (it sporadically drops back to 60°C from around 80°C; it stabilizes again above 90°C). Unfortunately, I didn't log this with VCDS in the control module for engine management, but I also observed dips downwards in temperature within that same range.
Vielen lieben Dank nochmals fĂŒr eure RatschlĂ€ge uva. Mquack!
Best regards from Munich!

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:
"Hi,"
The GRA (Gear Range Adaption) is not activated or deactivated in this control unit via "coding," but rather through a "login" process.
Both are unrelated, but still result in write access to the configuration EEPROM.
-> Never touch a running system.
Best regards, Rainer.
