G4 1.6 FSI knocking shortly after start?

Hello, I have a G4 1.6 FSI engine ("BAD" code). The car makes a knocking/rattling noise for about the first 2 seconds after starting the engine, but then it sounds fine.

I read that it might be the variable valve timing unit.
What do you think? What would the cost of such a repair be at a workshop?

Sometimes, FSI engines exhibit a rattling noise, which can also be caused by the timing chain.
The chain replacement, including the chain tensioner, costs approximately from 900 euros.
Please definitely check (or have checked) the oil pump, especially if the noise occurs when the engine is warm or immediately after starting it.

The problem is known to Volkswagen. It is indeed related to the camshaft timing system. In cases of extreme noise, it can be replaced, which may reduce the noise, but may not eliminate it completely.

Unfortunately, I have to disagree with that, even though the post is quite old...

We had already helped 4 customers with rattling problems in our workshop.

The rattling sound, as I mentioned, is coming from the chain hitting the steering housing... in the upper area...

All 4 motors were completely silent after the chain, guide rails, and wheels were replaced!

... what did the fun cost the customers?
