Hello everyone. I need your help.
I need to know when I need to have the major service (specifically, the timing belt replacement) done on my 1.9 TDI (AJM) engine. I thought it was supposed to be done at 60,000 km. However, VW told me via email that it should only be done at 90,000 km (for vehicles manufactured in 2001). But my Golf was manufactured in 2000. I thought that would be evident from the vehicle identification number: WVWZZZ1JZ1W184246.
Who can help me with 100% certainty?
Oh, and by the way, how much does a major inspection cost?
Thank you all!
markus
*Just a small addition: According to the registration number, the car was manufactured in 2001, but it was purchased and registered in 2000?!?*

At Volkswagen, the production year is always changed after the factory holidays (summer holidays in Lower Saxony), which is approximately in August. This means that a Golf manufactured in September 2000 will already have the production year 2001 according to the vehicle identification number, even if it was registered, for example, in October 2000.
All major changes at Volkswagen are generally implemented after the factory holidays.
Best regards, D.

Hi,
There's really only one (hopefully) reliable method to determine the timing belt replacement interval (what a word).
Take your service booklet to an authorized VAG workshop. The correct maintenance interval can be determined from the current lists using the information provided in the booklet.
My personal opinion, without guarantee: AJM Mj 00 = 60,000 km.
AJM Mj 01 = 90,000 km (wider belt) - as mentioned, without guarantee!
Best regards, Jürgen.

However, this information should also be available in the service plan itself. It usually specifies what needs to be done and when.
I doubt they know any better about that in the workshop.
Best regards, D.

That's not entirely correct. Maintenance intervals are often changed retroactively. Naturally, this cannot be reflected in the service booklet.
Best regards, Jürgen.

For my TDI (81kW AHF), the timing belt replacement plus water pump (for safety) cost approximately 550 euros, including all parts (tensioner pulley, idler pulley, water pump) and installation. I think the cost for the AJM engine is likely in a similar range, as the timing belt is installed in a way that makes it relatively easy to maintain.
If you want to be on the safe side, have the belt replaced at 60,000 km. After that, VW automatically installs the improved parts, so the interval is then 90,000 km. However, if the service booklet already states 90,000 km, I would only have it replaced then, or only when the warranty expires if you bought the car as new.

Okay, Markus!
After you weren't satisfied with any of the previous answers, I just went through all my old 'Gute Fahrt' magazines.
In issue 12/2001, I finally found what I was looking for.
For MKB AJM engines up to model year 2000, replace the timing belt every 60,000 km, along with the tensioner pulley, idler pulley, intermediate pulley, or injection pump timing belt.
For the AJM engine, starting with the model year 2001, including yours, the maintenance interval is every 90,000 km, which also includes replacing the tensioner and other related components.
Are you satisfied now?
Best regards, D.
