Hello experts,

I'm having a problem with my Passat 2.0, manufactured in 2008, 103 kW, BMP (presumably referring to a specific engine management system), DPF, DSG, with 206,000 km on the odometer.
"When I accelerate slowly, everything is fine. But if I need to accelerate quickly, the car vibrates and shakes a lot. And from around 140 km/h, I also experience vibrations in the steering wheel. I've been to many workshops, but no one seems to know what's wrong!"
According to VW's history, the car has new ZMG (engine control module), mechatronics, and a turbocharger. Recently, I also had to replace the tandem pump because I couldn't exceed 160 km/h.
Okay, so I bought the VCDS device and took some logs.
It doesn't quite look harmonious. Could you take a look and see if you agree with my feeling?
If anything is missing, I will provide you with the information immediately.

Thank you in advance.
Daycruiser.

Hi,

For me, nothing significant or unusual is visible in the logs.
MWB 18, PD status: OK.
MWB 23 BIP 7: Switching time deviation: Close to the lower limit, but mine (without any driving behavior issues) also shows the same.
MWB 11: LD Target/Actual: Over/Under-swinging by 100 mBar, OK.
MWB 13 LLR: OK.

But I would like to recommend that you create a proper log file for the forum again. Here's how to do it: https://community.dieselschrauber.org/en/viewtopic.php?t=12979.

What's missing from your data is (among other things) 100% throttle position (full load) with a mass airflow (MAF) of 3.8, 11, in the highest gear, at an engine speed of 1,500-4,000 RPM (be careful, it's fast. Requires a second person and a clear road).

Sure, I will provide the translation without any explanations. Please provide the text you would like me to translate. I will also try to mark or describe where any issues might be noticeable in my log.

Greetings.
Sure, here's the translation:

"Guste" is a German word that means "gust" or "gust of wind." It can also be used to describe a sudden burst of something, such as laughter or anger.

Hello Guste,

Thank you for looking at my logs. I'd be happy to provide you with the full data, including the missing metadata. However, I can only do that by the weekend.

"Are the significant negative deviations from cylinder 2 and the positive deviations from cylinder 1 in the shift time variation normal? To me, as a novice, it looks more like cylinder 2 is lagging behind, causing the engine to "oscillate" at a certain RPM (~1700-2300), with cylinder 1 also contributing."
If the four values are not approximately the same, as with cylinders 3 and 4, then...?
When using full acceleration (kickdown) and in "S" mode, there are only slight vibrations and jolts. However, above 140 km/h, there is a strong shaking in the steering wheel, as if the wheels have a significant imbalance (very uncomfortable). The traffic conditions didn't allow for driving much faster.
This is the second part, where the engine speed rapidly increases as we go uphill. That was approximately 140-150 km/h.
Im Anhang habe ich noch einmal den Zoom auf die Motordrehzahl vom MWB11 gelegt und mit Pfeilen die Stellen markiert, wo das Ruckeln sehr stark wurde. Das müsste dann der 5 + 6. It must have been a gang.

Can you tell me something about this, or is it all just nonsense that I'm imagining?

Okay, I'm not really an expert on switching time variations either. However, all the switching time variations are negative (none of them are positive) and have a variation of about 20 between the 1+2 measurements. The one logic gate I was able to analyze had a variation of 10 (with no anomalies).

"I'm glad you highlighted that again, because I hadn't noticed that irregularity in the RPM. I've inserted it directly as a JPG here for others to see. This is definitely NOT normal. However, I'm not sure what's causing such a significant fluctuation. I suspect, though, that it's a mechanical issue (that can't be precisely diagnosed with VCDS). It could be the dual-mass flywheel, the drive shafts, or something else... But that's just pure speculation on my part, so it's not very helpful."

I am eagerly awaiting the 3.8.11 logs.

Greetings.

Okay, I think I understand what you mean by "Guste." Regarding the ZMS, it should actually produce a mechanical noise, at least according to those who have a truly defective one. Everyone else has it replaced, but the noises persist! Moreover, my ZMS was replaced last spring by the previous owner. What I noticed today is quite curious. I shifted the gears manually, keeping the engine speed in roughly the same range, and the jerking and vibration were only slightly noticeable!!! icon_eek.gif

What am I supposed to make of this?

Okay, I'll record the logs over the weekend. I'll do one recording in "D" mode, one in "S" mode, and one manually. I'm curious to see what you can glean from them.

Thank you very much.

Okay, I've now created the logs.
I'm curious to hear what you all have to say about it!
In all three versions, the same distance was covered. Unfortunately, the speed was only up to 140 km/h.

Bingo, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system failure. Check the throttle body module and the EGR valve.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello diesel mechanics,
What will this repair cost me, approximately, at icon_biggrin.gif?
I have an upcoming appointment and would prefer not to be surprised. Do I have a chance of being granted a Kullanz request? Is there anything you know about that?

Hello,

Is the data set in the engine control unit original?

Please check the fault memory and readiness status. The throttle module should cost around 150-200 EUR. Before replacing it, it's important to check if any incorrect software has been programmed into the engine control unit (ECU) due to improper tuning or similar modifications.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Diesel mechanics,
Thank you for the analysis. I can rule out any major damage. The car was owned by a company for 3 and 3/4 years, and I've owned it for the past six months.

I'm curious to see what the icon_biggrin.gif friendly person makes of it.

At the end of the week, I can tell you more.

Thank you again.

Hello everyone,

I received the message from icon_biggrin.gif. They say that the AGR is okay, but they removed the transmission and replaced the dual-mass flywheel under warranty (thankfully). The result is that the jerking is still there! icon_twisted.gif

@dieselschrauberViewing profile: dieselschrauber
What led you to suspect a problem with the AGR (Abgasrückführung)?
Can I replace the AGR myself, or does it require special tools?
Do I need to adjust anything on the diagnostic device?
Can you help me with that?

Hello,

because in one log file, the "exhaust gas recirculation control" reading is stuck at 100.6%, while the other log file records plausible values.
Depending on the model, the throttle valve or EGR valve is controlled pneumatically or with an actuator motor. The versions I am familiar with use plastic gears.
When a tooth is loose, you'll experience effects similar to what you described, until the tooth eventually falls out completely.

The side covers of the gear mechanisms can be removed to inspect their condition.

Or do you have a funny data set (chip tuning) installed, which could also be the cause of such effects (e.g., due to turbocharger issues or failed modifications)?

Best regards, Rainer.

Okay, I'd be happy to check that out.
Can I replace this part myself if it's defective?
What else do I need? Seals or anything similar?
