Hi everyone,

It's Tuesday again: my Passat is going to the workshop.

So, a friend had "raised concerns" that the car only goes up to 210 km/h, so I spent a long time searching on Google.

Here's a preliminary note: The air mass looks good, but it's the first one in (mileage approximately 160,000). I don't have any logs available, but I'd be happy to create some if that would be helpful.

The issue of performance loss due to software updates is nothing new, but unfortunately, I have never been able to find out which specific versions are affected.

I don't want to make a big deal out of it with "but the display shows 217"... However, I do find it a bit concerning that it only reaches about 205 after GPS. It hasn't bothered me before, but when you read that others are achieving speeds of up to 235, mine is noticeably slower.

Is it worth having the workshop investigate the loss of power and potentially perform an update? Does anyone have a list of which versions are affected by this power reduction issue?

Thank you in advance, and have a happy Easter.

Marco.

Hello,

Regardless of the software version, the fuel injection amount is reduced when...
- the engine is overheating (monitor the coolant temperature),
- the exhaust gas temperature becomes too high (monitor the exhaust gas temperature(s)).
- the air mass is too low (quantity limitation due to air mass).

That is to say, even if everything appears to be in order, inaccurate readings caused by faulty sensors can lead to a loss of performance, just as actual faults, such as a leak in the turbocharger system, can.

Leaks in the turbocharger system can be identified by oily spots and whistling or hissing noises when the engine is running at full throttle.

Regarding the mileage of 160,000 km: Has the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) been emptied/replaced? What is the amount/volume of ash?

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Rainer,

Thank you for your answer! icon_smile.gif

I didn't really have anything better to do, so I sacrificed another quarter of a tank.

I tried to capture your 3 points in the first log (I hope I got the right ones each time). I accelerated from 0 to full throttle in the log, but it still didn't come out of the "quagmire."

I also logged 3-8-11 again, maybe someone with more expertise can take a look. From my perspective, everything seems fine.

DPF: No modifications have been made. According to VCDS, it is at 129 out of 175. I have not logged the differential pressure, but it is 10 mbar when stationary.

Regarding the image: I'm surprised that he doesn't lose speed going uphill – in fact, he seems to be gaining speed. This suggests that there's power available and the engine isn't working at its maximum capacity...?

I'll check with VW to see if a new version is available and what changes have been made... I don't want the car to have even less power after that icon_wink.gif.

Best regards,

Marco.

Hi Herbert,

125 kW at 4,200 revolutions per minute.

It easily revs up to 4,500/5,000 RPM in the lower gears, but struggles to reach 4,000 RPM in 6th gear.

I've thought about it some more overnight, and I'm increasingly convinced that this is a software issue. I can't explain the slight acceleration on the hill any other way.

On Tuesday, I will contact the workshop to request an update, and I hope that will resolve the issue.

Best regards & thank you very much.

Marco.

What does MWB 27, position 4 say? Or what is written in adaptation 07 or 14?

Hey there,

Can you briefly explain the background?

"Unfortunately, I don't have a log with the actual fuel pressure, only one with the target pressure and deviation (attached). At idle, it's around 260 bar. I can gladly log the actual pressure again under full throttle if that would be helpful."

"The update from 07/14 isn't working (unfortunately, I don't remember if I got an error message during login or if it was simply unavailable...). What do you want to know? There were 5-6 channels listed there..."

Best regards,

Marco.

/edit: I've added a new attachment; I tried to capture the fuel pressure. Unfortunately, I didn't think about the specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC) you requested. Will this still be helpful? I've noticed that it's not reaching the target value from yesterday (2040 bar), but only around 1800?

Slowly, the point is being reached where, as someone who isn't a mechanic, the whole thing is becoming too complex for me. icon_wink.gif

To address the initial question, here are some recent findings:

Quote:
Address 01: Engine.
Control unit part number: 03L 906 022 QG.
Component and/or version: R4 2.0L EDC F000AG 6212.
Encoding: 0000078
Company number: WSC 56176
VCID: 7AFE51F135C4783

Enhanced identification.
Serial number: VWZCZ000000000
Identification: BPG-810.
Revision: 13H01---
Date: 03/17/09
Test item number: 1334.
Manufacturer part number: 0737.
Flash Status
Programming attempts: 1
Successful attempts: 1

Programming status: 00000000
Requirements: 00000001
Flash Tool Number: 139221 133 56176
Flash Date: 09.14.17
Software.
I3WF
Miscellaneous.
Hardware number: 03L 907 309.
Batch number: 78.
Typ key:
Vehicle Information.
Vehicle Identification Number: WVWZZZ3CZ9E12xxxx
Letter code: CBB
VCDS Info:
Label file: RKS\03L-906-022-CBA.clb
Readiness: Script not available.

So, in my case, something was flashed (for no known reason - there's no record of it in the DISS, WOB knows nothing about it, etc.).
Version 6212 appears to be a neutered specimen, and it is also quite rare to find online.

Obviously, version 3736 is what I want (Thanks to ICeY).

I will address the issue with VW on Tuesday and ask them to re-flash the software to version 3736. I will provide an update if I have any new information.

Thank you very much for your efforts!

Marco.

A downgrade will not be possible at VW icon_wink.gif.

I also suspected/feared that.

The official statement from the car dealership is that they are not allowed to or are unable to perform a downgrade.

I should probably file a complaint with VW now; that might actually achieve something.

I'm now keeping an eye out for an engine control unit (ECU) - that's probably the easiest way to go about it...

As soon as there is any news (I will, of course, write the complaint!), I will let you know.

Thank you everyone.

Marco.

I need to bring this topic up again. Today, I expressed my dissatisfaction to VW WOB, stating that nothing has happened since April. Half an hour later, icon_smile.gif called me and asked me to come in.

Turns out, my car is absolutely fantastic and everything is working perfectly, and he can't figure out what's causing it. He suggested I try putting on 205 tires.
(Air mass, rail pressure, differential pressure (325 mbar), turbo control behavior, ...)

Einziger Hinweis ist die Luftmenge, die aus irgendeinem Grund zwischen 2000 und 4000 Umdrehungen irgendwie "einbricht" (s. Image).

The icon_smile.gif said that this deviation does not explain the problem or is unlikely to have a significant impact. I should now "replace" the wiring from the MSG to the MAF sensor, because the pins might no longer be making good contact. The MAF sensor is less than 10,000 miles old and made absolutely no difference compared to the old one.

So, it would now start with a "shotgun" approach to troubleshooting the icon_smile.gif, meaning replacing things like the catalytic converter or DPF, which isn't exactly "wallet-friendly" if there's no "guarantee of success."

Now, my question: Could a deviation of approximately 100 mg/H cause the needle to become permanently stuck at the 210 mark?
"Could a log using VCDS be helpful? If so, please let me know which measuring blocks are needed..."

Thank you in advance.

Marco.

No, that's due to the standard 210 km/h speed limit, which was already present in the 3736 model icon_wink.gif.

With a 170 horsepower CBBB engine? icon_eek.gif

"On my CBBB, the speedometer reads 3736, and it accelerates quickly, reaching 220 km/h on the flat. (All speedometer readings with the standard 16-inch tires.) You can also see that it reduces fuel consumption."

Hey there,

Thank you for your reply!

I'm surprised: Max's CBBB with a score of 3736 reportedly runs significantly above 210, and on good days, with conditions like "Heimweh" and downhill sections, it can even reach 240.

If I remember correctly, Robin said something about a limit of 210 being nonsensical (but not impossible).

It seems like the device has a software limitation. Do you know if the newer versions (I have no idea what the current version is) no longer have this limitation? Or is a chip tuning that removes the limitation the only solution?

Thank you very much.

Marco.

More likely at CBAB icon_wink.gif.

03L907309_03L906022QC 3732

I made a mistake in the file. icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif

CBBB is likely limited to around 217...220 (speedometer approximately 230). icon_wink.gif
