Post10-07-2012, 12:29    Subject: Coolant loss through the heater in the Polo 9N Quote

Hello,

When driving or turning on the ventilation, there is initially a regular smell of coolant (similar to Maggi) coming from the vents of my partner's 9N (without air conditioning). This is accompanied by a slight decrease in the coolant level over time.
The "Maggi" smell also occurs when the ventilation is set to "cold".
I believe that depressurizing the cooling system would not be helpful, as even after (felt) hours, there is still overpressure coming out of the equalization ball when the engine is turned off, as long as the engine still has residual heat.

On the previous weekend, I had opened the ventilation box so far that I could examine the heat exchanger: it seemed to be completely dry and without any traces of evaporated coolant.
Also, I checked the engine compartment. I was able to inspect the pipe flange to the WT without opening the connection and could not detect any leaks.

After reassembling, the problem persists: after cold starts, the airflow or ventilation system initially releases a slight Maggigeruch (moth smell) into the interior.

Smell tests with the hood open (if the smell is coming from the engine compartment and somehow gets into the ventilation intake) have so far not yielded any results.

Where could this annoying leak be located?
Gruß Ulf

Hallo Rainer,
