Hello fellow enthusiasts,

I would like to briefly share my experiences and solutions for a problem I've been dealing with for some time: brake shuddering and steering wheel vibration at higher speeds.

Brake shudder:
It kept getting stronger, even though I had replaced the brake discs on both the front and rear axles and checked for runout (less than 0.02 mm at the wheel hub or less than 0.06 mm at the brake disc).
The rattling occurred both at low speeds (when braking for a traffic light) and at higher speeds.

Steering wheel vibration:
It occurred at speeds of 120 km/h and approximately 170 km/h. The initial suspicion is an imbalance in the tires. Re-balancing them seemed to provide a slight improvement.

After a long highway drive, I was annoyed and spontaneously decided to buy a new set of tires because another balancing procedure didn't seem worthwhile, even though there was still about 3.5 mm of tread left.
The tires (Michelin, size 205/55 R16) were just under 6 years old.

With the new tires (Bridgestone, 205/55 R16), the car drives 'like new.'
The steering wheel vibration is completely gone, and the brake judder is no longer present! icon_idea.gif
The running smoothness of the entire vehicle is much better.
Here, the combination of (slight) imbalance and hardened rubber (after six years icon_twisted.gif) was likely the trigger.

Best regards, Oldi.

Thank you for the information.

Our golf game is starting to get rusty again.
It disappeared after I decided to replace the front brakes, including the rotors and pads. Now it's starting again.

Since I'm planning to switch to winter tires soon anyway, I will pay more attention to making a change.

... or were tires with wear patterns/sawtooth formations from being used on the rear axle (for too long) transferred to the front axle?

OK.

The switch from SR to WR didn't change anything.

The brake discs/pads are 2 years and 15560 km old - so they have been used mostly for short distances icon_sad.gif.

Today, I felt that after driving about 120 kilometers on a rural road in the rain, the tires started to feel a bit less smooth.

So, I'll be taking the brakes apart soon, when I have some time, to remove the pads and verschandeln them.

Okay, I've translated the text. Here it is:

"I have done this!"

The hazard lights turned on icon_cool.gif.

It's not quite right... but I'm still playing around with it.

Try this: First, warm up with a light pedal pressure, then apply strong braking force when continuing on your way without being affected. Then, brake forcefully one to three times, and afterwards, while continuing, delay the cooling process by applying very slight pressure. Gradually reduce the pressure, and if necessary, repeat the process as described above.

The slower the cooling process after hard braking, the better it works. Important: Never come to a stop with hot brakes and keep your foot on the brake pedal!
