Hello everyone,
an idea that was particularly inspired by Bertil's story yesterday about his PD.
When you look at the posts describing problems, you'll find that some specific makes and models (MKB) are mentioned very frequently, while others are rarely or never mentioned, which is naturally also influenced by factors like the prevalence of certain models and the typical distances they are driven. What do you think about creating a kind of data collection specifically on that topic?
"Of course, the built-in survey function of the forum wouldn't work for this (because you have to enter data, not just make a selection), but I'm sure it could also be easily evaluated manually (and I would be willing to do that)."
Therefore, I would suggest that everyone posts information according to the example I'm about to provide, and includes all TDI models they own, have owned, know about, etc.
Mileage / Months / # minor damages / # major damages / total mileage / age of the car.
In my example:
ASV 22500 km 18 months 0 0 22500 km 18 months
One line per car.
Based on the mileage and number of months, the other details seem consistent. "Minor damages" refers to issues that were annoying but easily fixable (either by yourself or for under €500), while "major damages" includes everything else, such as turbo replacement or a new engine.
I think we don't need to break it down into much finer detail to get a reasonably clear result in the end. This includes summarizing all the other data, and from that, one can derive things like "at 2 million kilometers and 120 months, x minor and y major damages occurred..." and then perhaps convert that to damages per 1000 kilometers or per year.
It all makes sense, of course, only if there's enough data, but I think we're a sufficient number of people here for that, right?
What is NOT allowed:
- Damages that are not related to the engine (transmission, drive shafts, clutch, accidents, etc.).
- Damage caused by modifications (this would distort the statistics).
When it comes to damage to modified engines, it's naturally a matter of judgment, but if it's reasonable to assume that the damage would have occurred even without the modification, then it should definitely be included.
Best regards,
Jan, who is curious to see what will happen. 1Z5 CFHF / AHB H4D

Hello Jan,
Hopefully, your statistics will work out better than my attempt .
1 owner, 181,570 km, 26 months, 0 accidents, 0 owners (covering approximately 64,000 km in those 26 months).
Best regards, Rudi.

And here's my two cents on that:
1Z 155000 own 46 months 4 0 225000 Year of manufacture: 1/95
AWX 4900, privately owned, 1 month old, 0 miles, 0 hours, 75000 (currency unspecified), year of manufacture: 12/200.
and here are a few more gasoline-powered vehicles:
ABS 100000 own 75 months 3 1 165000 Year of manufacture: 10/92
RU 280,000 own 60 months 5 3 365,000 Year ?/87

Hi Jan,
Do you want me to crash the database right now?
AXR 16000, 6 months, 0, 3, 32000, 1.5.
and the good old...
1Z 130000 70 months 2 0 160000 7 (where the obviously defective ESP was not included in the calculation) Gruß Bertil

Hi everyone,
@ Bertil : At least AXR isn't doing so well after the start...
@Everyone: Please, when entering the mileage, do NOT enter the total mileage of the vehicle, but rather the mileage for which you are also providing the other information. This is because we don't have accurate information about the mileage and any damages that occurred before you owned the vehicle, right? Therefore, for example, I would only consider Rudi's 1Z to have 64,000 km, as that mileage also includes the 26 months he owned it and any damages that occurred during that time.
@Joergs: I also still have a gasoline car, the predecessor to my TDI.
AEX 40000 20 0 0

Wouldn't it make sense to also include the current total mileage? Otherwise, it's clear that a motor that has run between 200,000 and 250,000 miles in twelve months is in worse condition than one that has only run between 50,000 and 100,000 miles in the same twelve-month period, even though the mileage and the time period are the same.

@Private area:
You're right, but how do you meaningfully incorporate that into the analysis? "We can certainly collect that information; it's not a huge effort. Then we can use it when someone comes up with a meaningful evaluation."
So, the data would be as follows:
Mileage (MKB) / own mileage / own months / minor damages / major damages / total mileage / age
The last two, only if they differ from the others; in my case, they are the same... at least with the TDI. The older AEX doesn't really count (it already had 30,000 miles and 3 years on it).

Hi,
AAT / 25,000 miles (approximate) / 7 months / 0 / 0 / 130,000 total miles / 9.5 years
1 owner / 145,000 km (approx. 90,000 miles) / 7 years old / 3 doors / 0 accidents / New condition.
P.S.:
