Hi.

A colleague has apparently ended his BMW era and, after searching for an A3 8L, he is now looking for an 8P. He finally wants to get a diesel icon_smile.gif.

Now, BKD or, later, BMM are among the leading contenders.

How are the cylinder head problems of the early BKDs viewed?
Were they not "defeated" at some point?
Does anyone know when the BKD engine will be "available for purchase," or should people avoid this first 16V experiment?

The BMM engine quickly filled up its particulate filter (DPF) according to its owner's assessment. However, it might be more sensible to have the DPF cleaned rather than buying a new 16V cylinder head!

Thank you for your opinions.

Hello Martin,

Do both engines have EU4 compliance? If so, there shouldn't be any difference regarding the "highway robbery" sticker or the German vehicle tax.

Regarding the BKD engine: The cars likely have mileage well over 100,000 km. If the timing chain was prone to failure, it would have likely been replaced already, so it shouldn't be causing any problems now.

Best regards, Rainer.

Yes.

To the best of my knowledge, the BKD also receives the green sticker.

And that's true, because if the head is already new icon_smile.gif, then the BKD engine might be even more interesting, because with high mileage, you won't have any issues with a DPF.

Okay. The repair must have been done properly, and it's great to have a newer ZK (presumably referring to a specific component or device) in that case.

So, even so, pay attention to starting problems and the coolant level. It's best to briefly get onto the highway and really step on the gas.

Regarding crack issues:

Good morning!

I have this car - it's been completely trouble-free except for a new turbo at 190,000 km - and it gets a green sticker, even WITHOUT the DPF nonsense. It's worth noting that my AYH even has better emissions values than the BKD, but the latter is only Euro 3. Someone should actually know something about cars and not just think about making money... icon_lol.gif

Shouldn't leaks in the PDE (positive displacement element) be less frequent in the engine since they are "double-flanged" (i.e., without a wedge)? Or am I mistaken?

Here's an excerpt from another article (I cannot verify its accuracy!) regarding the cylinder head issue:

Currently, it has 220,000 kilometers on the odometer!

2.0 4V TDI Coolant loss with and without difficulty starting after standstill.

Problem description.

1. Coolant leak.
2. The engine starts poorly after a long period of inactivity (approximately 10-12 hours). There is a significant amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust.

The cause of this is a hairline crack in the water jacket of the cylinder head. This allows coolant to leak into the combustion chamber.

A production issue affecting a series of vehicles started with engine number:

BKD 402 570 } Motorenwerk Salzgitter, identification number 17.
BKD 178 692 } Motorenwerk Györ, identification number 26.

All BKD engines up to these engine numbers may be affected. The factory code and engine number can be found on the sticker located on the timing belt cover, under the engine cover.

As a customer service solution, the engine number and build configuration are first determined. Then, different tests are performed depending on the build configuration. Tests are conducted to check for pressure losses in the cooling system, the exhaust cooler is checked for leaks, etc. If a pressure loss is detected or if coolant is present in the cylinder, the cylinder head is replaced.

Cylinder heads for which the reason for the complaint cannot be determined must not be replaced!
