Good day from Hamburg.
After seeing "shutdown due to undervoltage" appear more frequently in my error log, I went to the incompetent person.
"We don't know which battery is installed in your vehicle, but the replacement will cost over €400."
I've already read through this and everything seems to be fine.
I simply checked myself to see which one was installed.
Unfortunately, I couldn't determine what kind of item it is.
Can you tell me what type of battery it is and what the "magic eye" is trying to tell me?
Does it need to be renewed?
I already understand the following points:
12V,
110 Ah
Dimensions: 392 x 175 x 190 mm.
Wiring: 0 (Positive terminal on the right).
My question is simply: Is it a lead-acid, lead-gel, AGM, or some other type of battery?
If it's a lead-acid battery (which I suspect, but I'm not sure), I would choose this one:
VARTA SILVER DYNAMIC 12V 110Ah 920A.
Voltage: 12 V
Capacity: 110 Ah
Cold test current EN: 920 A.
Dimensions: 392 x 175 x 190 mm.
Wiring: 0 (Positive terminal on the right).
It is also available here.
Regards,
arthur

I am familiar with the Varta battery.
The question was: What type of battery is installed in my vehicle, specifically under the driver's seat?
(see images)
I can also use eBay and Google.

I can't open the images here. The "magic eye" mentioned above is a highly simplified electrolyte density checker, but it only tests one cell at a time, so it's not necessarily useful for drawing conclusions about the overall health of the battery.

Hi Arthur!
Now that you can operate Google & eBay, the function of the "Magic Eye" is probably already clear, right?
Similarly, I don't understand the move to Varta, especially since the old battery already has "MOLL" printed on it. In that case, wouldn't you just put another one like that back in?
According to the images you provided, it appears to be a standard lead-acid battery.
It's definitely not an AGM battery, and MOLL doesn't offer batteries of that size.
Therefore, the type you are looking for is: 83110.
Also, I found it again, but this time using Google, and not eBay: http://www.moll-batterien.de/downloads/MOLL_Typenliste_Starterbatterien_PKW.pdf
Best regards from Munich!

... furthermore, you can easily find what you need using the VW part number.
http://www.passatkomfort.de/Daten/TReg/Fotos/Batterievergleich.jpg
suggests that the battery is sealed internally, which means there shouldn't be any issues, and that it's a standard lead-acid type.
The VW TN then explains the move to Varta, because the 1J0 915 105 AK was apparently also manufactured by Varta .

Great!
Thank you all for your answers.
That information about the VW TN platform was new to me.
But now I can order a lead-acid battery.
The function with the "magic eye" is understandable, but what one can actually see or is supposed to see has been a bit unclear to me.
In my picture, it looks like the acidity level is too low.

arthur

Hi!
Perhaps it would be a good idea to check the performance of the starter motor first.
These are the typical problems that occur in the fall, when you tend to use more lights and other appliances than in the summer.
It looks like the battery is 7 and a half years old.
That's probably where it is.
What else?
Do you need to calibrate the battery when it's replaced?
Grüße, Steffen!

Hello Steffen,
es könnte noch die 1. Be a battery.
The previous owner was not aware of any change.
"Pair battery?" or "Connect battery?"
"Doesn't this only apply to AGM batteries and similar types, and to vehicles with intelligent battery sensors?"
I thought I could just replace the lead-acid battery with a new one of the same size and that would be it.
I assume the battery is in good condition.
Could you also confirm that it appears as though there's nothing visible in the magic eye, suggesting a low acid level?
Regards,
arthur

Hi!
I'm not entirely sure about the battery initialization procedure for that specific vehicle.
That should be clarified beforehand, but it might be possible.
That's quite a code.
I once took a look at "The Magic Eye."
Inside the battery cell, there's a small float that measures the acid density. This float moves a lever, which in turn moves a small, differently colored plastic strip that is visible through a viewing window.
As far as I know, it should be green when the battery is fully charged and in good condition.
You could try fully charging it with a charger; maybe it will turn green then.
It says on it: "Replace battery if yellow or colorless."
I think I see a slight redness on you.
And, regarding the Lima check:
Over the years, I've developed a habit of doing the following whenever a car battery needs to be replaced:
to check the on-board voltage under load, which means testing the alternator's output.
Because in the past, customers would often claim that a new battery was defective after only 6 weeks, which then caused unnecessary trouble with the dealers.
Sometimes, the Lima systems were not fully functional.
Without anyone noticing anything during the summer months.
Otherwise, could you also take a look at what happens when you peel off the sticker that's placed across the battery, just a little bit at the edge?
whether removable lids for the individual cells are hidden underneath.
Something like that exists.
With a coulometric titration system, it's possible to precisely check the individual cells and their state of charge.
Grüße, Steffen!

Hey everyone!
The MagicEye can:
weiß/klar = acid level too low / battery life depleted.
deep black = battery discharged
grün = Batterie i. O.
...yellow = please clean it
No, I believe that "yellow" marking was only used on Opel batteries.
And in practice, the "green" color isn't always that easy to identify, and I don't think it's something you can photograph with a cell phone, especially with the flash. So, it's enough if you shine a flashlight on it and see a greenish shimmer.
The functionality of the aforementioned "Magic Eye" is self-explanatory below. It consists of a small, green plastic ball (with a specifically matched weight) and a light prism. There are no stripes, and it's not yellow.
For MOLL battery types, the battery terminals are always accessible - except for AGM/Gel batteries, of course.
Best regards from Munich!

That was the correct answer. 83110 = Lead-acid battery, no pairing or coding required.
I did what I should have done all along. I called the manufacturer directly and asked about it. They were very nice and helpful.
Thank you, and I apologize for bothering you with something like this.
