Hey everyone,
I have a question today about registering an aftermarket trailer hitch.
Vehicle data: Audi A6 4G, first registration 01/12, 3.0 TDI, 180kW, vehicle identification number: WAUZZZ4GXCN0_____
Can I register the clutch with the VCDS system in the vehicle's onboard system?
If so, please tell me which menu items I need to click to access the login page, and whether I need to enter any codes there or simply click the "Login" button.
Also, perhaps some important points to keep in mind.
I read in the clutch manual that after completion, I can attach a trailer to test the functions; therefore, before registering with the on-board system. Is that correct, or should I first register the device with the system, then enable the clutch setting to "ON" on the vehicle's media display, and only then check the functions?
Sure, I'd be happy to help. Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.
Thank you for reading.
Michi.

Hi Michi,
For questions like that, a quick scan of the text can be helpful.
The procedure for retrofitting an AHK (trailer hitch) is always similar, so please refer to the following:
Okay, I'm ready. Please provide the German text you want me to translate.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Rainer,
Here is the car scan data from the Audi A6 4G. I'm curious to see what happens.
Best regards,
Michi

Hi Michi,
It's starting off well... like "what comes out of it." How about you tell me where you've been messing around with it? What kind of AHK (engine control unit) or electrical kit was installed? What is allowed and what is not allowed?
Please upload the Coding.log file.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Rainer,
Hey, I haven't messed around with any of that, because the CAN bus systems seem way too risky to me.
Okay, the AHK (trailer hitch) is from Westfalia and features a fixed coupling. The electrical kit also comes from the aforementioned company. Manufacturer.
Battery disconnected and everything assembled.
After that, I attached the brackets and tested everything.
Full functionality is available.
The following lights are now blinking in the center of the control panel.
Symbol "AHK" because AHK is not yet logged into the system.
Symbol "Air suspension," as the air suspension likely isn't functioning when a trailer is attached, since the trailer isn't registered with the system.
On the multimedia screen, I cannot activate or deactivate the "Suspension" function for the trailer because the option is grayed out, as the trailer is not yet registered in the system.
What is Coding.log?
I think it's a coding log.
Where can I find them, and do I need to run the auto-scan again because of that?
During the installation of the electric kit, NO cables were left over.
Everything is connected as planned, and 3 fuses have been installed.
Only the AHK (AutoHotkey) program needs to be registered on the system, nothing else.
Could you extract any useful information from the car scan?
Best regards,
Michi

Good morning.
Okay, that's a reasonable starting point.
"Swiveling attachment device"
You say you have a rigid AHK (trailer hitch), so I suspect that the trailer control module is incorrectly coded, specifically as if it were a swiveling type.
Please check the encoding in address 69 and set it to "fixed."
Quote: | | Symbol "AHK" because AHK is not yet logged into the system. |
Please go to address 19: Diagnostic interface, and enable the AHK control unit.
Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will then provide the translation, followed by a review to correct any errors.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hi Rainer,
Thank you for the feedback.
I will do everything as you've instructed and then report back to you.
whether any further errors are reported.

Hi Rainer,
Address 69: The bar is not jumpered to enable "rigid" AHK.
Therefore, I assume that only retractable tow hitches can be installed on Audi A6 4G models from now on. Can you or anyone here confirm this?
That's certainly my suspicion.
Best regards,
Michi

Hi Rainer,
Is there also phone support available? Things would move faster then.

Hi Michi |
Hi Michi,
Phone support is rarely helpful for vehicle reprogramming. Experience has shown that this approach doesn't work from the customer's perspective.
I recommend either posting here in the forum or...
Okay, here's the translation:
"Diagnosis, Live Support, System Support"
to use.

Hi Rainer,
What code do I need to enter there?
It's not predetermined.
The current code is 16 digits long.
My head is spinning.
Address 19: Trailer found in the build list, but not yet marked.
not yet coded in a rigid AHK format.
Regards,
Michi.

Hi Rainer,
Address 19: After clicking "Coding".
On the VCDS screen, there's a clickable, narrow bar visible, and at the end of this bar, there's a small arrow. The current code is displayed within this bar. One can then...
Click the arrow, and a bar will appear with a list. However, this doesn't happen for me, because the bar isn't highlighted, so the arrow doesn't respond when I click on it.
Regards,
Michi.

Use the coding assistant and read the manual.

There's nothing stated about whether it's fixed or not, so why are you claiming that? You are connecting control unit 69 to the bus, and that's all.

Hi Rainer,
Address 69:
The code should be 50200.
The current code is 16 digits long.
How do I do this?
How do I change the last five digits in the current code, or is there another way to do it?
You are talking about "reading the manual".
Which manual are you referring to? Is it the VCDS manual or another one?
I'm not very familiar with the new electronics. I belong to the "old generation of mechanics."
That's why there are so many questions.
Regards,
Michi.

Hi Michi,
Quote: | | Which manual, VCDS manual |
Of course, I mean the information from VCDS, because it explains many important things.
I'm not sure what Ross-Tech includes in their installation package, but the following is highly recommended reading, especially the tips and instructions (everything that is written in red):
I am sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online, including the PDF document you linked. Therefore, I am unable to provide a translation of the text within that document.
The 50200 you mentioned is not a long code, but rather a parameter set for VAS diagnostics.
When coding control unit address 69 (trailer control unit), click the button for the extended coding assistant.
Your current long code, according to Autoscan, is: "Code: 01090800000000002".
You navigate through the individual bytes using the up and down cursor keys, where you can read descriptions and check boxes/drop-down lists. There's definitely a choice to be made between a fixed and a retractable tow hitch.
Best regards, Rainer.
