Hello,
Recently, I had described the problem I was experiencing with my 2.0 TDI BPW (approximately 170,000 km) – the DPF was becoming clogged (I was able to regenerate it). The cause was likely burnt oil.
Now, it has become clear that the engine is constantly demanding oil and can be "top-up" every week. The interior smells of exhaust fumes, and it also smokes at the traffic lights. However, it hardly smokes while driving. I had feared that the turbocharger was broken. But these symptoms are described as typical for a clogged crankcase ventilation. I have found several sources on this, and there is hardly anything about it on this forum. The problem seems to occur more and more frequently as the cars get older. Audi apparently likes to install a new turbocharger as a precaution.
Now, I wanted to replace the vent (it's located directly above under the engine cover), but it seems that it can only be purchased as a complete set with the valve cover for a hefty 150€. Does anyone know if/where I can buy it separately? Or does anyone know a good cleaning method?

Fact:
If the KGE is sealed, nothing comes out.

Resulting Thought:
Before you swap it out on suspicion, I'd first disconnect the pipe at the KGE and see if there's really no signal.

- KGE is open. However, the rubber in the control valve (the canister on the valve cover) is always {EXPANDING} and can potentially close the opening. Therefore, I tried it without, and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, this specific wear part is not available for purchase, only as a complete valve cover for approximately 150.- (depending on the engine variant). A blatant act by the manufacturer!
While there are some posts (with unclear results) stating that the whistling has stopped after replacing the entire cover, I believe this is purely coincidental and not technically explainable.
- My engine didn't need any oil at all; the sensor was faulty. Possibly, excessive buildup in the intake system due to slight overfilling.
- My turbocharger also doesn't seem to be leaking much oil. You can check this by disconnecting, cleaning, and then rechecking the hoses between the intake pipe under the radiator and the intercooler(s) (for my 170hp engine, there are 2). "Initially, some oil will come out (assume this is normal!), but if it's cleaned and doesn't quickly refill, then the compressor is okay in this regard)."
- Exhaust fumes inside the vehicle: Connection clamp under the center console is leaking and the outer rubber grommet on the gear shift with a hole for rodents; difficult to find.

- Main problem: I still occasionally smell exhaust fumes at the traffic lights. Now that the likely existing oil residue has burned off, it clearly smells strongly of NOx. It seems that this smell occurs especially when the engine is idling particularly rough. I now believe that this is caused by carboned-over injectors and backfiring. In normalem Betrieb ist nichts zu sehen (im Gegensatz zu meinem B5 TDI), was darauf hindeutet, dass die Menge des Lecks im VerhÀltnis zur Soll-Einspritzmenge gering ist.

Therefore, in my other thread, I asked for recommendations on how to verschandeln PDE valves.

There should be absolutely no oil coming from the turbocharger, unless it is completely broken. Oil in the intake tract comes from the crankshaft oil gallery.

So, if you can smell nitrous gases in your car, I would immediately check the exhaust system for leaks. Why, after cleaning, LL (likely referring to Liquid Lithium or a similar substance) hoses suddenly emit a strong-smelling NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) appears quite...unusual.

Small note on the side: In addition to all the side effects of nitrous oxide (excluding nitrous oxide itself), prolonged inhalation can lead to impotence. Therefore, it seems more sensible (a pun) to check the pipe underneath the car.

Hello,
After a long time, here's an update for future generations icon_biggrin.gif.
So, the crankcase ventilation wasn't the problem: it could be easily blown out. As a precaution, I temporarily installed the cap from my second BRD (the one that doesn't smell) for a while: it still smells terribly. I know that many people suspect the crankcase ventilation, and it has also helped some to replace the entire cap. But why this should be the cause (even though it is actually blocked) remains unclear to me.

However, the "dome" contains a membrane that is designed to only allow opening when there is slight internal pressure. Unfortunately, this membrane is not permanently oil-resistant and tends to warp significantly. As a result, in extreme cases, the membrane surface may already be largely raised under pressure, while the center with the metal ring still closes the opening. This is likely to be perceived as a blockage in individual cases. It is more likely that the channels in the lid itself will become blocked, but these have an endless cross-section. Even with my model, which has a high proportion of short distances, the hoses, membrane, or anything behind it are clearly glued together.
Of course, this membrane (although clearly a wear and tear part in this particular configuration) does not exist as a separate component, but only as the entire cover for over 140.-. And as is typical, Audi does not offer a fair repair solution here, although it is clearly another unnecessary mess due to poor quality, which could have been detected in a long-term test (which was carried out on dozens of vehicles, both on the engine and the entire vehicle).

So: The problem still exists. Especially now, in cold and damp weather, you can also see increased fogging of the rear windows, even in warm cars, more so than in other cars (exhaust particles/oil droplets form condensation nuclei).
But I would rather start a new post on a more appropriate topic.

Short answer with minimal text:
In the event of a partially closed crankcase ventilation (KGE), it actually first pushes the oil dipstick (at least a small amount) out, and blow-by gases then enter the immediate area.

Does the measuring rod stay where it should, then nothing is missing.

Can this also be determined based on measurements of the fuel injectors? No matter which TDI.
