Hi everyone,
I would like to increase my LM setpoint, meaning I want to achieve a higher maximum airflow rate.
However, it's not possible with VCDS, at least not through menu adjustments in the MSTG.
However, when a chip is installed, the mass airflow rate is very likely to be shifted upwards. So why does it work in that case, but not when you try to shift it yourself?
Can anyone of you help with this?
I am grateful for any advice.
Regards,
Michi.

Hey Shortie! icon_wink.gif

This is not always possible with lawn tractors, depending on the year of manufacture, and even when it is, it can only be adapted to a certain extent.

VCDS is a diagnostic tool, not a software modification tool.

Best regards from Munich!

PS: A proper scan, or at least a little more information about the vehicle, might have saved you from that stupid answer - maybe. icon_smile_thumb_up.gif

Hi Dieselbear,

Well, that could be done in a nicer way icon_biggrin.gif.
Here's the data. I can't run a full scan right now.
Passat 4motion 2.5, 132 kW, engine code BDH, year of manufacture 2004, 380,400 km.

The reason for increasing the target value of the mass airflow sensor (MAF) is simply to minimize its dependence on the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system.
It clogs the entire intake path with oil vapor, which then solidifies and also reduces the intake cross-section, which is not exactly beneficial for performance.
Maybe you know the answer.
Hopefully, I will get my chip tomorrow.
"I will then create a before/after log to see what changes are made. There should be data changes that are not necessarily beneficial for extending the engine's lifespan."
Regards,
Michi.

Hey Shortie! icon_wink.gif

Of course, there are nicer ways to say it; however, it's also constantly the little sister of "shit." icon_lol.gif

I've already understood what you're planning, why you're doing it, and the deeper meaning behind it, so don't worry.

If you absolutely need it via a chip, then make sure you get it done properly. icon_wink.gif
...but there's also the short path – a purely mechanical and physical solution that is valuable in itself and, above all, doesn't involve any software (modifications).
You probably know this better than I do, so please do whatever makes you happy(er) icon_smile_thumb_up.gif.

Best regards from Munich!

It involves adaptation and the corresponding channel, but a login is required to unlock it beforehand. However, VCDS will normally display everything to you. icon_wink.gif

However, with a Euro 4 engine, it's quite possible that nothing more can be done.

I would suggest repairing the AGR (Abgasrückführung) and possibly the crankcase ventilation system, rather than just treating the symptoms. Also, clean the intake passages.
Okay, I understand. Please provide the German text you want me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.
It has already been commented on quite a bit.
The MSG (Motorkontrollgerät - Engine Control Unit) likely doesn't just detect a disconnected connector at the AGR valve (Abgasrückführung - Exhaust Gas Recirculation), but also a "failure" of the AGR system itself. That's why it's called OBD (On-Board Diagnostics).

Regarding the BDG (specifically the EDC15VM), I believe you can use the adaptation channel. However, installing a chip will trigger the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp), but that's not a major issue to resolve with engine control units. If you say you're "getting" your chip, I hope you're not installing a piggyback device. Those devices only damage your turbocharger, and the increased soot production will make the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) even more problematic than it already is.

I tried it again today with the new update from yesterday.
Pressed the MSG button, entered the code 12233, and pressed "Confirm".
"Ratter ratter ratter," then a message appeared in a small new window.
"too many connections".
Can anyone here explain what this means?
The MSG didn't accept the code. When I tried again, the input field still showed "00000", just like it did before I attempted to enter anything.

@ Dieselbear:
You seem to be writing in riddles. However, I don't feel like guessing riddles, and how do you assume that I know more than you do?
"Although I'm a mechanic, I've only been dealing with diesel technology since I started driving a diesel car, and that's only been for a little over 2 years."
If it's possible without modifying the software, I'd really like to know.
You could, for example, install different LED modules with a larger surface area and greater thickness, and perhaps use different nozzles. I'm not aware of any other solutions, only those related to the electronics.

@BlackfroschViewing profile: Blackfrosch:
"The chip isn't working, so it's not working, but I'm not doing it that way. I prefer to use the MSG; it's supposed to be gentler on the charger."

@HerbertViewing profile: Herbert:
The crankcase ventilation system is working correctly. When the oil filler cap is open and the engine is idling, there is no excessive pressure, but rather alternating pressure and vacuum, which can be felt by holding a flat hand near the opening (indicating valve activity). At 2000-3000 RPM, there is some pressure, but not excessively high. The oil separator is new.

"12233" is not a code, but rather a login code used in some control units to unlock the adjustment channels.
The encoding of the control unit has nothing to do with this and will not be changed! icon_idea.gif

If the control unit does not allow any changes to the corresponding adjustment channels, you can type whatever you want.

Hello Rainer,

I tried it the way Ulf described it in the article "Exhaust Gas Recirculation: Function and Troubleshooting" from June 2011.
Here is an excerpt from his article:

"The "softer" solution, which involves adjusting the air mass setpoint to higher values, does not result in any error entries."
"Log in to the MSG (Main System Gateway) (code 12233) and access the channel with the desired and actual air mass values (3) for adaptation."

That's exactly what I did; I called the MSG and then entered the login code 12233 and confirmed it.
Then a message appeared in a small new window: "too many connections."
What does that actually mean?
Regards,
Michi.

The engine control unit is providing an error code that indicates "too many connections"... icon_cool.gif

The exhaust contains no oil vapor, nor any oil, unless the compressor's bearings are leaking.
Otherwise, the oil only comes through the crankcase ventilation system.

Hello Rainer,
"Too many connections to continue."
I also tried using the login "26262" (for V6 TDI), but I got the same result.
What should I understand by the term "too many connections"?
Wenn der Motor aus ist und nur die Zündung an, dann hat das MSG doch nicht viel zu tun. Wie können da zu viele Verbindungen entstehen? IGive me a riddle.

Here's a brief description of the process, just to make sure I understood it correctly:
Accessed VCDS, plugged in the OBD connector, turned the ignition on (engine off), then selected "Engine Electronics," clicked the "Login-11" button, entered the login sequence, and clicked "Confirm."
Regards,
Michi.

Hi Herbert,
"Two weeks ago, I already disconnected the LL hoses when I had the camshaft replaced. I didn't see any oil there, just a very thin film on the inside of the hoses. That's practically nothing. You might be right about potential bearing leaks, but I have almost no oil consumption. It only uses a little oil on the highway at high speeds, but over 10,000 km, it's probably only about 1.0 liters. I think that's normal, or rather, it's very low oil consumption."
Regards,
Michi.
