Hello everyone,

Here's the initial diagnostic scan from my 2004 Passat, 2.5 TDI 4motion Variant, 132 kW.

The scan is from today and was taken with the old VP 44.

According to the "Friendly" service representative, an adjustment is not possible because my MSG (presumably a vehicle component) is supposedly faulty. I had the MSG checked, and it was found to be in good working order.

Now, let's discuss the situation:
My engine has been completely overhauled, so it's like new. The VP 44 was replaced with a fully refurbished one. It has the same part number as the old one, but the software is a newer version.

"The Friendly" now only uses ODIS. It's probably a new diagnostic system.

Apparently, with this system, the MSG was unable to read the data from the new pump.

Now, let's get to the facts of the matter:
When the vehicle was delivered in Switzerland in 2004, it came with two keys, and a plastic tag attached to the keyring with a 7-digit PIN number. This PIN number is used to create a new key if the original is lost or unavailable.

This number can also be used to adjust the WFS if the corresponding components (MSG, KI, VP 44, and other modules) need to be replaced.

I assume that the 7-digit PIN number is stored in the MSG and can be used to unlock the locked MSG if necessary.

I was told that ODIS generates a key code and then uses it to unlock the MSG (Module Control Unit), so that it can read the data from the new pump and then adjust the WFS (Workshop Information System) accordingly.

Sounds good, but it doesn't work on my Passat.

You can perform this action with VCDS, provided you have the 7-digit PIN, as well as an operating number and an importer number.

I have the 7-digit number, but I don't have the operating number or the importer number.
I don't have a company; I'm a private individual.

From a logical standpoint, I don't think it can work with the ODIS system. How is ODIS supposed to know which number to enter? The 7-digit number is always specific to a particular vehicle with a certain VIN, and it's not transferable.

Problem:
If I plug in the old pump and clear the "MSG locked" error, the error remains cleared.
If I connect the new pump, the "MSG locked" error reappears immediately, even after I clear it.
That's fine, because the MSG needs to be unlocked first, and the pump data needs to be read and adjusted for the WFS.
After that, the error will be gone.

"This is how it should be, but that's not how it is for me, and the question then becomes: 'Where is the error, perhaps even a flaw in my own thinking?'"

What do you think? Can this problem be solved?

My plan is as follows:
I'll take my VCDS, go to the dealership, and try to do it myself on-site, with the help of the friendly mechanic (he'll enter the operating number and importer number, and I'll look away while he does it), and then hopefully it will be done.
It would be great if it worked that way.

Thank you for reading.
Regards,
Michi.

Hi,
Your car scan is still incomplete. The overview of all ECUs with their status is missing; only 9 out of 20 scanned ECUs are displayed.
It's also peculiar that some STG (Steuergeräte - control units) show a WSC (Werks-Spezifischer Codierungs-Wert - factory-specific coding value) of 99999, which suggests that they may have been coded or tested without being linked to a specific Volkswagen vehicle.
You won't find a company number or importer number displayed on the Friendly device; these were saved once during the initial setup of the VAS system within ODIS. ODIS is a central system and contains all data associated with the vehicle identification number, including the login credentials for the MSG. Furthermore, a company number and a WSC (Workshop Code) are not the same thing.
The ODIS system rejects the STG (steuergerät - control unit) because, presumably after previous tuning, the checksums are incorrect, or the stored WSC (working security code) does not match the system. The fact that something is wrong is also evident in the thread that was rightfully locked. It's not the pump that's going into a strange operating mode, but the MSG (motorsteuergerät - engine control unit). Please don't tell me that the MSG has been checked and is in order. Surely the inspector can unlock it then.
Have you ever tried the "12345" method for the WSC, as suggested in the VCDS manual and the wikis? Surely you've read about it? If not, it's time to do so. Or did it not work?
Then, the only real option is to acquire and train a non-tampered-with MSG (Mobile Security Guard).
I suspect this thread will be closed soon.

Hello Herbert,

Thank you for the informative explanation in this case.

The errors only started appearing after the VP 44 was replaced; before that, there were no issues for 11 years.

Can you explain to me what the WSC is and what it is used for?

Since I've had VCDS (since 2014), I've made it a habit to perform at least two full car scans each year. I'll compare yesterday's scan with the previous ones.

I also noticed that thing about 99999.
I'll send you a private message about that; it doesn't belong here.

I've read the manual several times, but I haven't found anything about the "12345" trial process, and I still haven't found anything after reading it again today.
I will get back to you when the problem is resolved.

Thank you for reading.

Regards,
Michi.

The engine control unit stores only a 5-digit PIN. The 7-digit PIN is calculated based on the date, dealer number, and importer number, and is only valid on the day it was calculated.

Why don't you retrieve the login information from the engine control unit (EEPROM) or the instrument cluster? Then you could program it yourself, assuming nothing has been tampered with.

There's a small software tool that can extract the login information from the device; just Google it.

Hello everyone,

Here are three more Autoscan reports: one from May 11, 2015, and two from September 16, 2025, and October 30, 2025.
Subject: Only 9 addresses displayed out of 20 scanned addresses from May 11, 2015.
Subject: WSC Entries from September 16, 2025.
Subject: Updated WSC entries from October 30, 2025.

Regarding point 1, the MSG has already done that since I've owned the Passat (this is just for proof). I don't know what's wrong with it.

Regarding points 2 and 3, the Passat was at the dealership from October 2nd to October 8th, 2025, to have the new VP 44 adapted to the WFS, which, unfortunately, did not work.

The WSC entries were updated at the friendly VW service center.

Herbert informed me that the operating number and the WSC are not the same.
However, I haven't received any feedback from him yet regarding what function the WSC serves and what impact a change to the WSC would have.

I'm looking forward to hearing your opinions.

Thank you for reading.

Regards,
Michi.

Hello chli1976,

I obtained the 5-digit PIN code from the EEPROM of the MSG today.

I'd like to briefly describe the process of how I plan to do it.

If my approach is not correct, please let me know and correct me.

Work steps:
Open the MSG software, then click on "Configuration," select "Learn vehicle data" from the options, and in the new window, enter the PIN code in the corresponding field. Then, click "Start" or press "Enter."
After adapting to "Save," close VCDS.

If this is correct, please confirm.

Perhaps I'm on the wrong track, and a different approach is needed.
I would appreciate any advice, as I want to avoid making any mistakes or incorporating any errors during the modification. I'm a mechanic, not an electronics expert.

Thank you for reading.

Regards,
Michi.

The instructions on what to consider when replacing the VP44 fuel injection pump have been around for a long time.

Hi Rainer,

Thank you for the information.

I will report back on whether it worked.

To the first section "Determination of VIN and IMMO-ID".
Does the old pump need to be plugged in for this to work?

Regards,
Michi.

Why don't you just read it? The first section has nothing to do with entering the PIN.

Hello everyone,

I tried the adaptation on Saturday, but unfortunately, I didn't manage to finish it.

Here's the procedure, as described in Rainer's instructions:

The user was prompted for their PIN, entered the five-digit PIN in the login field 11, and clicked "Confirm." The window then closed automatically.
Then "Adaptation" was called, channel 050 was entered, and "Read" was clicked. The next window appeared (see photo below), and then it stopped working.
No PIN entry field.
"PIN?" is displayed in the top left corner, but I can't enter a PIN there, so I couldn't save anything.
The entry "PIN?" is highlighted in green, but it is not visible in the photo.

I then started the engine after 5 minutes. It runs very well when cold, but the smoothness of the engine changes as the operating temperature increases, and it then becomes quite rough, like a misfire in a gasoline engine, but very severely. I then became too uneasy and turned off the engine.

Finally, I performed another system scan (see below), but it didn't find any errors.

I suspect the temperature sensor located near the VP44 pump, as it's responsible for providing the data that the VP44 uses.

I don't know where the error lies now.

The partial success is that the MSG is no longer blocked.
Perhaps one of you will notice where the mistake is.
I would be grateful for any advice.

Thank you for reading.
Regards,
Michi.
