Hello.
I'm experiencing a problem where I occasionally hear a clicking or popping sound coming from somewhere in the front of the car. It sometimes happens when shifting weight, other times when starting off, or when changing gears.
I've actually already renovated everything on the chassis.
Strut mounts, tie rods, control arm bushings, ball joints, shock absorbers.

In my opinion, that would only leave the engine mounts.
The vehicle is a Volkswagen Golf 3 with an AHU engine. Is there a way to determine if any components are defective, and if so, which ones?

Thank you for your help.

The cracking sound could also be coming from a driveshaft joint or a wheel bearing.

To check the engine mounts, engage the parking brake, put the car in first or reverse gear, and carefully start moving. Have an assistant observe to see if any of the mounts are lifting. However, extreme caution is necessary; slipping the clutch could cause the observer to be crushed.

It can also be done safely on a flat surface: Even with the engine off, you can put it in a high gear (to get a little more momentum from the drivetrain), stand in front of the car, and gently rock it back and forth. This way, you can see how much the engine tilts forward and backward, or if it rotates, lifts, etc.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello Rainer,

Sure, that's possible, but it only works if a bearing is completely damaged. Often, you only notice it when you have to apply more force while carefully starting the movement.

I had my people take a look at it, but you could also stand next to the car and look at the bearings from the fender area; there are three of them. Usually, the bearing that fails is the one on the transmission at the rear and the engine mount in the center at the front.

The cracking sound can also originate from the exhaust system, such as the flexible pipe or the catalytic converter.

No, you can tell. And that's why I'm writing about it, because I've already done this with two of my cars. There was absolutely nothing there before, and if you don't have welding goggles on, you'll also notice that the engine is moving back and forth unusually strongly.

Of course, you can do it the way you suggest, but that requires someone to help you who also needs to have some knowledge about it.

Best regards, Rainer.

Damaged engine mounts become visually apparent due to silicone oil leakage, which then resembles spilled brown sauce. The brown color is often due to rust that has already accumulated within the mount.
In the case of the 3-series, you can also easily observe the tilting from the driver's seat: Engage reverse gear, release the handbrake, and depress the clutch, then approach the car with the hood open from the side/below, and watch the cylinder head cover as it dances.

Okay, but only if such engine mounts are installed. For example, my old A3 had completely solid rubber engine mounts.
"That is to say, if brown liquid comes out, they are definitely defective. However, if no brown liquid comes out, it could still be a defective part or a non-defective one."

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello,

Fluid is already leaking from the rear right bearing.
Does anyone have instructions on how to do this replacement?

Thank you.

"Remove the M10 screw, then remove the two M8 screws. Then try to lift the gearbox enough so you can remove the bearing. If there isn't enough space, you will need to unscrew the bracket on the gearbox to create more room, but make sure to support the gearbox beforehand."

Expect that the large bolt will practically spin freely if the bearing is already damaged; then it will become a real hassle to deal with, and I experienced this about half the time with these vehicles.

Hello.

Thank you for the response. I meant the rear right bearing underneath the engine.
"There are also three screws there. I was able to loosen two of them using extensions from above, but with the third one, it's difficult to reach it properly from either below or above. I already removed that counterweight once, but it didn't really help."

Is there a trick to it?

THANK YOU.

Just wanted to give you a quick update.
I only managed to remove the screw after I had removed the drive shaft; then I was able to get a good grip on it with the ratchet.
The described shaking/vibration is gone after replacing the engine mount.
