My old Golf is still running around the neighborhood. After now 430,000 km, the dual-mass flywheel (DMF), which has been defective for a long time, has finally reached a point where it makes the car almost undrivable. The rest of the vehicle is actually in very good condition (despite the high mileage).

Okay, there's a LUK replacement clutch set with DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) and release bearing. So far, no problem. But since the transmission is already being removed (or is on a lift... weighing 50kg), there will likely be other things that should be replaced as well.

I immediately think of the crankshaft oil seal and the shaft seal for the transmission input.

The shaft seal is now only available as a complete unit including the housing. However, it's likely that an 85*105*11 LF type is installed, which is readily available individually at a reasonable price. What are people's experiences: Can the old seal be removed relatively easily and the new one reinstalled over the crankshaft, or does the entire flange need to be removed (which, to my knowledge, would require removing the oil pan, along with sealant for the oil pan and the paper gasket behind the flange)?
Regarding the gearbox: either I'm too stupid to find the information, or... Does anyone have any information about a repair kit/seals/required parts?

What do you think about this?
CORTECO Shaft Seal Kit, Clutch 19134540.
Should I try to hold it in place? One flange has WeDi on it, and another is for the gearbox input shaft. Or should I just leave it alone?

I generally avoid buying things like that. Especially with high mileage vehicles, you never know how worn the tires already are.

Yes, I think so too. It would only be replaced if it's actually defective. But you should still be prepared for that possibility.

At over 400,000 km, we no longer perform any preventative maintenance.

Hello!

Okay, in my opinion, if you're already putting in the effort and it's not exactly cheap anyway, you shouldn't necessarily skimp on the small details, especially if there are any early signs of a leak.

KW shaft seals were available individually at one point, but they are quite specific parts and have a defined direction of rotation.

You can replace them individually, but the problem is that they need to be installed perfectly straight at the rotational speeds they operate at.
If the KW (shock absorber) is already installed, you might be able to find a way to make the strut extension rod protrude another 2 mm. You could try using a spacer behind the ring or adding 2-3 seals behind the flange. Applying a thin layer of sealant can also help. I've used similar tricks before, and they worked, but you have to work with absolute precision. Also, make sure there's enough space for it.

"In my Golf, the dual-mass flywheel (DMF) was still okay at 280,000 kilometers, and it's probably still good now, but the clutch release lever had cracks in two places."
Also, please pay attention to that – it's the most important thing.
Grüße, Steffen!

The clutch lever problem only affects 5-speed transmissions. 6-speed transmissions have a central release mechanism. icon_wink.gif

You need to replace the Simmering ring behind the flywheel along with its housing. I'm not aware of anywhere that sells them separately without the housing. The cost is approximately €35 net. For example, Elring has the sealing compound already attached to the housing flange. You don't have to remove the oil pan for this. I'll send you a picture of the part tomorrow at work.
I've had the pleasure of experiencing this twice already this year. My parents' Golf AXR had a transmission failure at 220,000 km. At the same time, the clutch and both oil seals were replaced. They actually didn't look too bad.
A few weeks later, the ZMS (torque converter) in our Sharan started making noises when shifting gears. You could also see in the diagnostic tool that the values were constantly changing. It had 214,000 km on it. The clutch, including the central release bearing, and both sealing rings were also replaced.
With the Passat AJM, the clutch typically lasted around 190,000 km. I also did all the maintenance work on that car. So far, everything has gone well each time.
But I also respect the opinion that you should generally avoid messing with simmer rings as long as they are sealing properly. It's just a different situation when it comes to your own cars.

"I understood that the flange of the crankshaft seal is screwed into the engine block and additionally secured from below with two screws through the oil pan flange... I thought that to get everything sealed properly, the oil pan would have to be removed. Good tip, it will save work. Does Elring include all the seals in their kit?"

Okay, here's the translation:

"Now, could you give me some tips about the transmission input shaft? Is the oil seal also housed in a flange, or how is it designed? Do you have a part number for that seal?"

Here are the pictures of the ring. The Elring part number is 012.370, which is for the ASZ engine. It costs around 35 euros net. If you want to replace it, then install the complete unit with the flange, like the one shown here. There's not much to be saved by doing it any other way. Even if you can find it somewhere as a separate part. Think about the hassle and potential problems if it leaks later on. And don't forget about the new clutch getting contaminated with oil.In the Golf, the oil seal was installed together with a guide sleeve. The part number for that sleeve is VW 02A141180A. I still have the old one lying around and can take a picture of it if you like. It wasn't like that in the Sharan. However, the Golf has an EUH transmission, while the Sharan has an FUX transmission. This might not be compatible with your car. You should double-check this with a parts specialist using your vehicle registration number.
Okay, the oil seal behind the flywheel isn't of the conventional design; it's a more modern PTFE sealing ring. It's shown in the picture with a mounting sleeve, and that's how it's supplied, at least by Elring.

Thanks so much. That's very helpful. I'll be more careful with my phone from now on...I promise.

The gearbox is an ERF.

I'll check on that again.
I thought the underside of the flange might need to be resealed against the oil pan. But the flange shown here seems to be sealing everything properly. Another thing learned.

Hi!
That's how it used to be.
Back then, flanges didn't yet have those nice rubber seals.

Tomorrow, I'm getting rid of some scrap metal. That's why I took a picture of the guide sleeve with the inlet seal still attached. This probably won't be relevant anymore for the 6-speed ERF.
But your 430,000 kilometers with the same clutch is incredible! That's quite an achievement.

Das It helps a lot.

Okay, so the flange doesn't need any additional paper gaskets either. Is the ring used without oil? Does the mounting aid explain itself? I've never had that before. Let's see if we can tackle this on Wednesday evening. We still need the sealing ring for the gearbox...

I have so many questions; this will be the first ZMS.

Yes... if it's made of PTFE (Teflon), and it should be.
