regarding the term 'retrofitting':
Is the speedometer, which goes up to 260 km/h, also an aftermarket addition, or is the AXR engine so good (when it's not at the workshop) that it needs something like that as standard equipment?

I just don't understand Volkswagen anymore.
My 1Z had a speedometer that went up to 200 km/h, which was sometimes, unfortunately not often enough.
Now they're definitely overdoing it a bit.

All new speedometers go up to 260 km/h, but it's likely that no TDI will exceed 220 km/h .

I already found that annoying in my parents' 1.8T car... because even if the car could theoretically reach 240 km/h on the speedometer, what's the point of it? It only reduces the readability of the part of the scale that you actually use.

While it seems to me that the distances "below" are larger (which makes sense), still...

Okay, so in my ALH automatic Octavia, it only goes up to 220 km/h. That's already quite high considering the registered speed is 180 km/h .

All the Golf and Passat TDI models I've seen that are from the year 2001 or later reach speeds up to 260 km/h. A Golf SDI reaches up to 220 km/h, like it used to. However, I'm not sure if that particular car is actually from the year 2000, and whether that makes a difference...

@Bertil: How does the leather feel? I have a Golf Highline with a leather steering wheel, but in the past, the leather was relatively hard and grainy. Today, the leather is much thicker and very soft. I like the feel of it much better...

I don't have a manual transmission available right now, but mine is from the year 2002 (model year 2003). I'll take a look when I get the chance .

"The leather is beautifully soft, especially the cowhide. I particularly like the thickness of the steering wheel now. It's not that I think the standard steering wheel is too thin, but with the leather cover, it becomes much more grippy and comfortable. Also, the unpleasant burning sensation in your hands when it's sunny is gone. And in cold weather, the leather warms up faster."
I did the same thing with my first car, and now my father is using that steering wheel in his 3-series after 5 years.

The speedometer is standard equipment. My aftermarket speedometer also only goes up to 220 km/h.

By the way, since the last repair, everything has been quiet and there's no more smell (hopefully it stays that way!).

It's likely a standardized parts strategy. The same speedometer is used for almost all models, regardless of whether it's a 1.9 SDI or a 1.8T engine.
