Whatever the reason, the zipper on one of the child seats had come undone. Consequently, I removed the cover of the footrest, naively believing that I could simply zip it back up. But how else should it be: there's no one there. The ends are open.
"Does anyone have an idea how I can close this again?" VW certainly won't have anything/be able to/know anything, other than selling a new car .

I would take that piece to a tailor or similar shop and buy a zipper with similar dimensions. Then, cut off the end of the zipper and detach the "pull" from the purchased zipper. (Or what is the technical term for the "pull" part of a zipper?).
I went to our local tailor's shop today and showed them the zipper. After just under 15 minutes, the closure was reattached and the end was sewn shut.
It was definitely more effective than browsing through a large selection of zippers online and attempting the repair myself.
