Hello,

My turbocharger smells bad and produces a cloud of black smoke when under full load.

Mileage: 270,000 km.

It doesn't bother me personally, but it would be noted as a defect during the vehicle inspection.

I've also been told that the airflow might not be right. Perhaps it's due to accumulated carbon deposits in the intake channels?

They had encountered this issue with the friendly staff before.

A Volkswagen Group (VAG) employee was driving a Passat and says that the exhaust smoke is black, not blue/black which would indicate a turbo problem.

What are your experiences with that?

Is anyone from Central Switzerland around?

I have VCDS software, but unfortunately, I've never read any values from a Passat before.

Perhaps the previous owner installed different software on the engine control unit, as is also sometimes done in Kosovo.

Is it possible to find out about that somehow?

I once had that with a customer's truck icon_biggrin.gif.

But by the time the authorities (MFK) object to it, it must already be causing quite a problem...

Do you hear any hissing sounds when it's running at full load?
Definitely check the boost pressure using VCDS to see if the target value is being reached and what the actual boost pressure is.

You can also remove the EGR valve and inspect its internal components to see if there's any buildup or if the intake channels are blocked.

Is he performing at his full potential?

Okay, then I'll check the boost pressure.

I actually have to do it anyway, to check if anything has been changed in the MSG.

The EGR valve was already almost completely blocked before.
Was changed? / Something was switched. / It has been replaced.

The intake ports are probably dirty now, I assume.

Performance would be available.
I can't say for sure whether it's full.
