Hello,
It's been discussed quite a bit about the long 5th gear, but I would also appreciate an overall longer gear ratio. Is it possible to simply change the axle ratio? Is this relatively easy to do, or are there any major obstacles?
I know what a gearbox does, but it's still a complete mystery to me.
Okay, let's talk about the numbers. How should I interpret them? For example, if the first gear has a value of 3.455, does that mean the engine rotates 3.455 times while the gear rotates once? And then, regarding the axle ratio, let's say it's 3.667. Does that mean the axle rotates once while the gear rotates 3.667 times? So, in total, would the engine rotate 12.70 times for one revolution of the wheel? At 1000 RPM, that would be (1000 / 60 = 16.67 revolutions per second, divided by 12.70) 1.31 revolutions of the wheel per second. With a rolling circumference of 1810 mm, that would be 2.37 meters per second, or 8.53 km/h in first gear at idle, which seems about right.
With an axle ratio of 3.5, you would achieve approximately 9 km/h. Is it possible to achieve this?
Sorry for the long text, but did I understand that correctly?

Okay. The translation describes the relationship between the speed of the driving side and the speed of the driven side. The axle ratio must be multiplied by the gear.
The fifth gear has a ratio of 0.75. Multiplying this by the axle ratio results in 2.7525. With a wheel circumference of 1810, this equates to 651 mm per motor revolution.
At an engine speed of 5100 rpm, the vehicle achieves a speed of 199 km/h.
The value is so good that I would say you can calculate it like this.
But I'm also interested in knowing exactly how the translation is being changed. Is it a different differential, or a different wheel on the differential?

That's exactly what I meant. Can I simply replace a gear there, or the entire lower part? I think that would be extremely convenient.
According to the speedometer, I'm reaching a little over 200 km/h at 5200 RPM. If we factor out the deviation (which is 4% according to an ADAC measurement), that seems quite accurate. We've discussed the issue of rolling circumference affecting the speedometer reading before. Who mentioned that before, and how can I roughly calculate that value?

... which of these transmissions use a cable-operated clutch and a linkage-operated gear shift, like the AAZ engine?
Would it be worthwhile to completely restructure everything?

I posted the translations earlier, but as Martin mentioned, the AAZ has shift rods, while the higher gears likely all use cable actuation. In that case, you would have to modify that as well.

Hello,
Regarding your discussion about gearboxes, which has been going on for quite a while, I also have something to add. About two months ago, my gearbox in my Golf 3 TD (AAZ) broke. Now, I'm thinking that while I'm replacing it, I'll get one that will increase my top speed to over 185 km/h. By the way, I've also installed an intercooler and slightly modified the fuel injection pump.
So, I was driving (driving) in the car, and according to the speedometer, I was going approximately 185 km/h, and almost in the red zone of the tachometer.
Okay, here's the question. Which gearbox fits the AAZ engine? I know there's a compatibility chart for this. I've already looked at it, but unfortunately, it was more frustrating than helpful.
I hope someone can help me with this. I'm also open to other ideas if they can help my car go faster.
Ich dank Euch so arg. Denn das Problem belastet mich wirklich. So be it.
Sure, here's the translation:
'Hello'
Patrick.

I believe the TDI transmissions would be a good fit. The Golf 3 with the 1Z engine and ASD transmission has the longest gear ratios. However, I don't think it's a good idea to simply lengthen the gear ratios, especially since you (at least Stukov) have a power increase of approximately 25 horsepower and xx Nm. Instead of just lengthening the gear ratios, it would be more beneficial to use a TDI transmission, as it's designed to handle higher torque, which your stock transmission likely can't. However, you would then have to switch to a cable-operated system.
The 1Z engine uses an ASD gearbox and has a top speed of 185 km/h at 3900 RPM. Unfortunately, that's the limit, even with 10c (presumably referring to a specific modification or setting). VW Golf III TDI Avenue, MKB 1Z, EZ96

Hello,
I also have the problem with oversteering, but I rejected the idea of changing the gear ratio from the beginning because I considered it too complicated.
Theoretically, you could fit tires with a larger circumference, which would easily allow for a 5% increase, raising the maximum speed from 200 to 210.
To the best of my knowledge, you can't get the TÜV (German technical inspection authority) to cooperate, at least not by simply showing up and asking; they just shake their heads.
Unfortunately, if it's installed without the required technical inspection (TÜV), it's easy to detect, which can then lead to problems with obtaining operating permits, etc.
Or how do you get a registration for tires that are not registered anywhere?
(Quote from Werner B at the TÜV: 'You'll forget that; it won't register anything today.')

Hello there.
I've already tried that thing about being able to fit larger tires.
However, it's only a short distance. Because on my Golf (specifically, my car), I have 195/50-15 tires, which is the standard size. I then asked my tire specialist what could be done. And he immediately told me that anything wider than 205/xx-15 wouldn't fit. Because if the tire's sidewall height (the height) becomes more than 3% larger than the original circumference, I wouldn't just have to register the new tires; I would also have to have my speedometer calibrated, because it would then be inaccurate.
I immediately stifled the attempt in its infancy.
Regarding the TDI transmission, I asked my mechanic. He said that the TDI transmission doesn't fit the TD engine, but I don't know why. Maybe it's because of the bell housing. It should actually work, though, since the engine block is the same, right?
So, what do I do now??????????????????
I am completely desperate and struggling with death.
greetings
Patrick.

'...and struggles with death.'
Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.
The speedometer issue isn't necessarily a problem, because it already shows 3-5% more than the actual speed. Also, the standard tires have different nominal rolling circumferences.
The question is: Is it permissible for the device to display 3% too little instead of 5% too much? That would be a delta of 8%.
It will likely be difficult again to prove compliance during the TÜV inspection.

In this game, you cannot win. There are only losers.
Okay, putting the fun aside, I actually didn't ask my tire dealer that specific question.
I'm not really interested in the tires. A transmission (like the one from a Golf 3 TDII) would be better.
'As I said, I'm pushing the engine so hard that it's really bad, not just for the sound, but also for the engine itself. And as I mentioned, I once considered installing a TDI (90) engine, but my mechanic, Heini, told me it wouldn't work. I forgot to ask him why.'
Okay, I need a transmission that fits an AAZ engine and will allow my ROLF Golf to go above 450 km/h. No, not that fast, but it should be more than 185 km/h. To be honest, it probably could reach 200 km/h, but as I mentioned before, it's painful to the ears and eyes to see and hear that little engine struggling so hard. And it's probably not good for it either.
'Greetings' or 'Best regards' (depending on the context).

Hi,
Just for the record:
It's crucial that the display shows enough information; it definitely shouldn't show too little. However, it is possible to adjust it by using intermediate gears for the speedometer sensor.

Yes, that's correct. It shouldn't display too little, but also not too much. The tolerance is likely around 7% of the tachometer reading.
Actually, the tire width isn't the most important factor. Whether you have 185 or 215 tires, it won't make the car faster; it's more likely to make it slower. Wider tires increase a car's drag coefficient (Cw value), and that will be noticeable! Switching from 15-inch to 17-inch rims should improve the top speed, but you probably won't enjoy the acceleration as much.
Whether your car actually drives at 200 km/h or just displays 200 km/h while actually driving at 180 km/h is another matter. My TDI, at least, seems to be very accurate and displays what I am actually driving, somehow.
I'm just going to say that your speedometer shows 200 km/h, but you're actually driving at 180 km/h, which could be related to your gearbox. I also doubt that you'll actually reach a real speed of 200 km/h with a long-ratio TDI gearbox, because it's not just the gear ratio that matters, but the engine also needs to have enough power to achieve that. And the higher the speed, the more power the engine needs to accelerate. VW Golf III TDI Avenue, MKB 1Z, EZ96

Hi,
To achieve a speed of around 200 km/h in a Golf or a similar car, you need between 110 and 120 horsepower, and that power should be available at that specific speed.
If the engine has this much power, then it should be possible to match it with a suitable transmission.
At some point, a long time ago, there was a thread about this (performance and real-world speed).
Best regards,

I installed a turbocharger in my Golf and also modified the fuel injection pump. According to the dynamometer, it now has 114.8 horsepower. It pulls strongly from low RPM, and there's still plenty of power available at higher RPMs.
That's why he also revs the engine to the redline in 5th gear. To prevent this, I either have to ease off the accelerator, which means I'll drive slower, or I need to install a transmission with a longer gear ratio. But which one?
I would appreciate it if you could help me.
Cheers!
Patrick.
