1.9 TDI AWX Engine Noises Under Load

Hi, I could use your help.

Yesterday, while driving my Superb 1.9 TDI AWX with approximately 440,000 km, I heard a noise that I didn't recognize after a long highway drive.

At partial load and even more so at full load, there are noises coming from the engine compartment, located in the center towards the right side of the vehicle. It sounds like slowly releasing air from a balloon.

"The turbocharger has approximately 300,000 km on it. Oil changes have been performed regularly. I'm not an aggressive driver, and I've always made sure to run the engine for a few minutes at the end of a trip to allow it to cool down properly."

Unfortunately, I can't capture the sound in the video. The noise is not reproducible when the device is stationary, and it is definitely not a typical turbo whistle sound.

The wave from the turbo doesn't have any play.

Here's what the turbo looks like; those small deposits inside the turbine wheel have been there for a long time. (see attachment)

Hi Daniel,

Spontaneously, and quickly, I would suspect a (small) leak somewhere in the charge air duct. Given the mileage, the plastic pipe might be cracked or damaged in one place.
"It might be worn out. Or the quick connector on the AGR valve might be leaking. Is there a loss of power? What does the error memory/OBD scan show?"

As far as I remember, the engine in the Superb is mounted longitudinally, like in the Passat, which would explain the direction of the noise.

There is no loss of power. No warning lights or other unusual indications.

Yes, the engine is mounted longitudinally, so the timing belt is located directly behind the grill (I always get confused about that).

Hello Rainer, first of all, sorry about the broken link...

I actually tried to record my own video of the noise, but unfortunately, you can't hear it on the phone, even though it's clearly audible to the ears inside the vehicle .

However, based on Richard's suggestion, I went back down to the car to specifically examine the plastic pipe in front of the splash guard, and I actually noticed a crack in the intercooler hose that leads to the pipe (see photo).

I hope this is a minor issue and that I can save myself a lot of time and money.

I will get in touch as soon as I receive the hose and have been able to replace it.

You can't really go wrong with Gates, right?
