My Škoda Fabia also had that issue.
I can only make a guess for yours. I've seen several TDIs where the engine mounts were defective. Some of them are hydraulic rubber mounts, and they are also very expensive. Gruß Bertil

When I bought my Golf 3 66kw AHU from a relative, I also noticed this noise. For me, it's a strong humming (a resonance) at around 1400-1500 RPM. I took it to the local mechanic, and the master technician took me on a test drive. He said it was likely coming from the resonance pipe of the exhaust manifold (sorry, please don't judge, I don't see my car from underneath very often, so I can't describe it in more detail). He asked me if I still had any warranty coverage, but it had expired, so he suggested leaving it as is, which wouldn't necessarily cause any harm. Whether what he said is correct, I cannot guarantee.
Regards,
P.S. The noise has been present since the very first kilometer of driving, but the previous owner didn't notice it.

Okay, that's reassuring. I only notice it when I want peace and quiet, especially when driving at 50 km/h in fourth gear within the town. It stops around 1600 RPM. I think the developers might have overlooked something regarding the noise threshold.
@Bertil
According to the invoice, the friendly mechanic already replaced the engine mounts. The engine mounts are those things where the engine is bolted to the chassis, right?
Best regards, WarLord.

I have a similar/the same noise in my Volkswagen Golf.
I seem to recall reading somewhere in this forum that it's supposed to be coming from a pipe or hose located near the water tank. Some forum members apparently solved the problem by adding extra insulation.
However, I've never checked it because I've been living with the noise for almost 221,000 kilometers now, as mine has had it since day one.
I hope I get to hear that sound again for a long time.
Best regards, D.

Right, the 1Z has three of those.

Here's a possible translation:
"Another possibility is that the air filter box isn't properly positioned. Because my car was completely flattened up to the windshield, the air filter box didn't fit as well after the repair. I added two extra rubber bands to secure it and placed a piece of carpet underneath the box, and the noise disappeared. I've also heard rattling from the engine control unit (which is located in the water reservoir area). I just looked around for the source of the noise, and then it stopped."
The engine mounts usually only vibrate under load. Gruß Bertil

I'm familiar with this issue from my Passat as well! In my case, it definitely came from the exhaust.

First of all, thank you for the active participation. Regarding Volkswagen diesel engines, this forum seems to be an absolute authority. *wink* *laughing*
The engine mount doesn't seem to be defective (I'll re-check it tomorrow), and to be honest, the noise doesn't really bother me; I just want it to be a little quieter sometimes.
Best regards, WarLord.

Hi,
Most of the time, the rumbling sound actually comes from the exhaust system. There seem to be bigger problems with the mounting, but especially with the connection between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe: there's a flexible joint made of steel mesh there.
On my previous Model 1Z, this connection already broke after 30,000 km, resulting in a booming noise.
However, this does not affect its functionality.
After the goodwill repair, it was less frequent, but it never completely disappeared for many years.
Occasionally, I have complained about this issue with services, usually without success.
However, once (when I hadn't said anything), the roaring sound completely disappeared after picking it up.
The master then said that someone had simply experimented with something, and that it wasn't quite as easy as it seemed.
By the way, I've also driven some 1.9 non-TDI cars that had the same problem.
It seems there are no problems with the 5-cylinder engine at all; or am I just lucky?

Did you see any cracks in the connection? By the way: I only hear the booming and vibration inside the vehicle.
Best regards, WarLord.

I had a lot of problems with the loud noise in my Corrado.
Ultimately, it was the flywheel. When we installed the dual-mass flywheel from the dealer (680 euros!!!), all the droning noise disappeared. It felt like Christmas, but two weeks later, the car was stolen...

Hello!
Bei meinem AFN kam ein Dröhnen von einem defekten Getriebelager. That also happened.
It's triggered by a clicking sound during operation. It's just another possible cause...
Greetings, Klaus.

Hi,
Did you see a crack in the connection? By the way: I only hear the roaring and feel the vibrations inside the cabin.
If I remember correctly, there was a visible crack from the outside.
I think it was at the connection point between the manifold and the flexible pipe section.
What was great about it back then was that they told me the rumbling noise could quickly return after the repair because the TDI engine vibrated too much, and the pipe section would break again very quickly.
At the time, I was quite annoyed because I wondered why such a mess would be created in the first place...
Furthermore, the rumbling sound of the older 1.9 TDI engines is often audible from outside the vehicle.
It has happened to me many times that TDIs have 'whizzed past' me , and then I thought:
'Look, a fellow sufferer!'

According to a used car test in Autobild magazine, the flexible section of the exhaust system is often a part that breaks down. However, I can't confirm this because mine wasn't replaced until last year when the entire exhaust system failed around 210,000 kilometers. And even then, it looked fine when it was removed.

It still looks pretty fresh from the top in my case. I'll take a look at it from underneath when I'm checking the crankshaft bolt and need to remove the underbody paneling.
Best regards, WarLord.
