The left low beam headlight is not working despite a new bulb

Dear friends,

The low beam headlight on the left side of my VW Golf Sportsvan is not working. There's an error message displayed on the screen.

However, even after replacing the bulb (H7), it still doesn't work. I haven't been able to find a corresponding fuse.

Can you help me with that?

If the wiring and connectors are okay, then one of the fuse boxes is likely the problem.

A wiring diagram and a legend indicating which circuit breaker controls what (specifically for Erwin's system) would be very helpful.

Warning: During intermediate checks, turn off the ignition. Otherwise, the vehicle's onboard computer may not provide power even after the fault has been corrected.

Hello everyone,

My Golf Sportsvan is having problems with the left headlight again.
After your last response, I took my car to a mechanic and had it checked out (sorry for not keeping you updated!).

The friendly technician concluded that the entire headlight assembly needed to be replaced. The "headlight wiring harness was checked according to the circuit diagram" (see attachment). It cost a quick 160 euros.

I then bought a non-VW headlight from a trusted dealer (brand: Van Wezel) and installed it myself. It worked well for about three months.

And now I'm experiencing the same problem again; here's the error log excerpt below.
It's highly unlikely that the new headlight is now broken again, isn't it?

What can you recommend to me?

An H7 bulb is connected solely through the two-pin connector on its rear side.

For the function of illumination, a headlight is not actually necessary. It can illuminate even without a headlight, or alongside a headlight.

If the bulb doesn't light up, replacing the headlight housing is completely useless as a troubleshooting step.

As mentioned before, check the fuse and wiring harness. Inspect the connector for corrosion, loose or slipped-back contacts, or contacts that are too loosely seated on the bulb's pins.

It's a shame that you can get completely wrong advice from someone who seems friendly.

Of course, also check a different bulb. Sometimes the filament can detach on one side and then temporarily reattach under tension due to vibrations... until the next bump or jolt.

Inside the headlight housing, between the connector and the bulb, there's also a section of wiring harness, approximately 50 cm long.
The 40A fuse F32 is located beyond the control unit on fuse holder C (SC31).

Connect the negative terminal of the voltmeter to the vehicle's ground or the negative terminal of the battery.
Measure the positive voltage at the lamp connections. A reading of 12 volts once, and no reading at all once, is correct. Two readings of 2 volts indicate a missing ground connection. When you suspect a loose connection, always turn off the ignition and then turn it back on (as Rainer mentioned above!).

Okay, I've found the cause now.

It was/is actually a loose connection.
Specifically, the contact to the "light source holder" inside the housing is loose.
I experimentally swapped the bulb holder from left to right. And when I use the original VW bulb holder in the aftermarket light housing, the light works. If you wiggle the connectors, the light goes out again. But it seems that the spring force of the bulb holder is sufficient for the light to work permanently.

I should probably return the light housing, but honestly, I don't feel like taking it apart and putting it back together again.

I'll keep an eye on it and can provide further updates if there's interest.

The only connections are between the two terminals of the H7 bulb and the connectors in the handle (which looks slightly different from what you have in picture 2).

Sometimes, when I encounter such problems, I also verschandeln the contacts.
There are fiber optic brushes available in the size of a ballpoint pen.
That's working pretty well.

Brief feedback:

I have reported the issue with the "non-VW headlights."
Statt dessen habe ich nun einen Scheinwerfer von VW (370 €) eingebaut. Damit scheint es nun zu funktionieren, keine Wackler mehr - bis jetzt!
