Post29-06-2024, 10:03    Subject: 2.0 TDI CRLB engine occasionally fails to start Quote

Hello everyone,

I'm chasing a ghost again.

It's about my sister's Passat. It was manufactured in 2014, has a 2.0 TDI engine, CRLB code, SW: 04L 906 026 AS, and has approximately 210,000 kilometers on the odometer.
Every few hundred kilometers, the car sometimes stops accelerating on long inclines on the highway (when loaded and with warm outside temperatures).

No lamp or display message appears.

In these cases, the only solution is to pull over to the side of the road, stop for 5 minutes, and then you can continue driving without any further issues for another 400-600 kilometers.

The ADAC came out twice, but they never found any errors. One of the ADAC technicians said that, based on experience, it's usually either the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) or the differential pressure sensor. My sister then took the car to a local mechanic. They didn't find anything despite several logging sessions. According to them, the DPF is only at about 70% ash load, and the differential pressures are good and plausible. It spontaneously regenerated during one of the test drives, at the expected interval and without any unusual status bits. They were talking about the intercooler that needed to be replaced because they had found traces of coolant on the intake side. That might very well be true, and those parts are known for that issue, but I don't understand how it could be related to their problem.

The last time, I arrived at the vehicle within 20 minutes and requested that it not be restarted after being parked in the lot. The only error code I found in the memory using VCDS was something related to a window lifter. After starting the engine, the car continued to run normally.

The accelerator pedal is showing plausible values, which is what you'd expect since it only appears every few hours of driving. Because it has happened *every* time (a total of 7 times) when driving uphill on the highway, that should be a clue, but I can't figure out what it means. That's why I thought I'd ask, because it's better than having random parts replaced in the car without knowing the cause.

So, has anyone here ever experienced something like this before, and what kind of advice can you give me?

Regards,

Oh yeah, one more thing.

Does anyone have experience with the NOx storage catalytic converters used in these vehicles? I make a living partly by working on SCR systems, but I'm not familiar with these specific components.

"I'm just concerned that the colleague might get too comfortable and then do something inappropriate. What other peculiarities or details could there be that might be relevant to me in connection with this problem?"

It was just a thought...

Hello,

Here's what comes to mind spontaneously regarding performance reduction due to:
- excessive coolant temperature.
- excessively high intake air temperature.
- excessively high exhaust temperature.
- due to low atmospheric pressure.

Of course, the values may actually be too high, or they may appear to be too high due to a faulty sensor or a cable problem.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello Rainer,

Willn't all of these violations be dropped?

Thank you and best regards.

No! Imagine getting an error message every time you cross an Alpine pass...

No, but I would expect it to happen with any power reduction that goes below the emergency level. The engine isn't running its normal operating range; instead, there's a sudden intervention. The car is practically undrivable. And it shouldn't be necessary to shut down an overheated turbodiesel just to be able to accelerate again.

We eliminate any emissions violations that reduce engine performance. I've experienced this with my Audi A6 as well. Okay, the Nissan I'm currently driving doesn't seem to have any of these issues, but its OBD system is also 20 years old.

Well... enough chatting.

What should I tell my sister? Is it normal? Does it come with the mileage and wear and tear? She's just too afraid to take her kids on vacation with it anymore.

Hello,

bei "unter Notlaufniveau" würde ich das auch erwarten. Behauptet auch keiner, dass immer alle SW fehlerfrei ist. icon_wink.gif

Perhaps it would be worth investigating whether the engine control unit software has been replaced with a newer version, for example, to fix bugs.
I'm sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided URL.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello Bo,

Is the vehicle's history known and traceable?

The error description suggests a failed field measurement / TPI 2040263/1.

The engine sometimes lacks power.

The engine has no power after a period of high output.

There is no fault indicator illuminated in the control panel housing.

After a spark plug replacement, the reported issues can no longer be reproduced.

Software update 04L 906 026 AT - Solution/Remedy.

Best regards,

Michael.

Thank you, Michael, for the tip.

I'm just asking. The car was registered for a single day and has been in the family's possession since 2015, with only 200 kilometers on it.

Documentation is available.

The strange thing is that it only happens during longer uphill climbs, i.e., under load, not when the vehicle is in a non-driving mode.

Make sure to check it out.

Hi there,
The field measurement should be recorded in the service booklet.
Wer hat den Fehlerspeicher ausgelesen? With what?
A performance reduction caused by environmental conditions should automatically disappear when those conditions no longer exist during operation.

Hello Herbert,

To allow it to disappear on its own, you would need to be able to continue driving. However, that's not possible. You have to shift back down to the 3rd gear to allow it to roll forward at a maximum of 1500 RPM until it reaches a stopping point. In higher gears, it pushes it out.

The field measurement hasn't been done yet, because the system is reporting it as "AS" instead of "AT". However, I still asked them to double-check.

The Austrian Touring Club (ÖAMTC) and the German Automobile Club (ADAC) once checked my car on the highway. I'm not sure what they were looking for. After returning, the large local VW dealer probably had all sorts of equipment. A few weeks ago, I was the first to connect with VCDS after parking.

Nothing in my inbox.

Okay, so the on-site inspection wasn't carried out, and we can't get the dealer to do it. The vehicle has been maintained at an independent workshop for the past 40,000 km, and they don't want to deal with it.

How do you proceed when someone wants to implement a measure only after an extensive (and expensive) troubleshooting process within their own organization has "validated" the need for it?

Wie geht ihr vor wenn jemand die Maßnahme erst durchführen will, wenn eine ausgiebige (teure) Fehlersuche im eigenen Haus den Bedarf "abgesichert" hat?

For contract workshops, when referring to the TPI (Technical Product Information), submit a cost request for flashing and select the appropriate workshop.

We only have two options here: a company with 2 locations and one with 6.

The one who made the initial statement is the one who wants to diagnose and decide for themselves whether it's necessary.

The person in charge says that there are no available options within the system for dealing with the car issue, and they aren't doing anything about it! They probably have too much work.

Does anyone know of a reliable Volkswagen dealership in Swabia, Upper Swabia, the Allgäu region, or the Swabian Alps that I could contact?

Hi there,
a) Write to Volkswagen customer service.
b) If the customer has car insurance coverage, they can be compelled to accept the order. If a Third-Party Insurance (TPI) is available (obtainable through Erwin), the customer order (billed to the customer) cannot be subject to preconditions.
