Hello everyone,
I unfortunately have a problem where I am currently unable to make progress. The steering gear on my G5 was defective (Gen 2) --> as a replacement, a Gen 3 steering gear was installed, as well as the cable set was adapted to Gen3 (The only difference is between 3-pin and 5-pin connectors on the power steering control unit, each with Kl15 Can high and Can Low with the Gen 2 wiring, the T5h/4 = Kl 15; T5h/1 Can Low or/br; T5h/2 Can high or/sw which then must be plugged into the 3-pin connector housing 8K0973703 - to be clear, I have checked the wiring multiple times as well as already measured the CAN bus (= 60Ohm) as well as the ignition signal, power supply etc.
Initially, some values in the adjustment channels were incorrect (the steering angle sensor was being read from the internal steering angle generator of the Gen 3 steering system, this must be deactivated) --> then the G85 was also successfully learned and the end positions. Therefore, I assume that the installation and wiring are correct.
The "Steering Assist Control Unit - implausible signal" error can also be cleared, but once you exceed 15 km/h, the ABS, ESP warning lights, and the handbrake warning light come on permanently, and it is only the STG for the steering assist in the ABS control unit 03 that is flagged as faulty.
These warning lights usually come on in conjunction with ABS operation (where the ABS control unit usually needs to be replaced) --> but I don't have an entry for this, see auto scan.
Has anyone else experienced this problem after replacing the steering gear? It was a new part from DRI, not a used one.
The only other thing that comes to mind is that the ABS control unit may have an outdated software version and cannot communicate properly with the Gen 3 steering gear.
I have already checked the ABS control unit connector for corrosion/poor contact, and everything is fine. So, I basically rule out a hardware/wiring fault -> but I am grateful for any tips.
I have also checked the steering angle, wheel speeds, etc. in the MWB -> all signals are available and plausible.

Just out of curiosity, why wasn't the existing equipment removed?
I had a 2008 Golf Variant with the same problem, and it was a real headache to fix.

Hello
My guess is that the ABS module is not receiving a message from the steering assist control unit.
Do you have speed measurements and steering angle data from the vehicle's stability control system?
I can imagine that at a certain speed, the steering angle becomes relevant for ABS/ESP.
A simple solution would be to use the correct steering assistance control unit...

Hello everyone,
yes, the values are all plausible, and I have also disabled the internal steering angle sensor of the Gen3 steering system, because it was still using the steering angle from the steering wheel, just like the original Gen2 steering assist.
Regarding the question of why I haven't installed the Gen2 steering assist â it's simply because of the discontinuation without replacement. Even in the accessories market, there are only Gen 3 products available now. Therefore, I need to find a solution to make it work.
I haven't made any progress yet, at least not with VCDS. The next step would be to perform a bus/signal trace on a comparable vehicle using other tools - for example, using PCAN Explorer, and then perform a similar trace on my own vehicle and compare the results. Unfortunately, it's not easy to find something suitable.
But the bus is okay, I have ~ 2.5V on Can High and Low, as well as the 60Ohm. I have also checked the bus load, so I would say that the CAN connection itself should be suitable.

Expected values would be 120Ohm... If the control unit is accessible for diagnostics, then the CAN bus is not the problem due to wiring or transmission.
Have you checked the coding options for the new control unit?

The 120 ohms value refers to the case when I disconnect the bus, meaning one of the termination resistors is not being measured - a closed CAN has, in my opinion, 60 ohms?!
But I don't think that's important - what I've noticed now is that in the 03 brake electronics, the label file is very incomplete, and some parameters have been set, but I can't say what they do or if I need to change several of them.
I just downloaded the latest VCDS data for 24.07., but unfortunately, there was no improvement.
Only the last 3 bytes are labeled.

Yes, 60 Ohms when terminated at both ends.
It was about coding the steering assist, which, according to your statement, replaces the old version, and therefore should behave in the same way.

Hello,
I have a question about understanding. Your golf is a 2009 model and originally had the Gen. 2 steering gear installed.
The contents list for the relevant RLF does indeed have a section on "Replacing Steering Gear from Generation 1 to Generation 2," but not from Generation 2 to Generation 3.
According to RLF, a Gen. 3 steering gear should have been installed starting in MJ 2009.
Where did you get the idea to replace Part Gen. 2 with Part Gen. 3?

The information comes directly from the E-T-K-A, as the Gen 2 model is no longer available and is also no longer available in the accessories market, with only the Gen 3 model being available.
Alternatively, according to AKTE, the Gen 3 must be installed, and the adapter cable set must be used, as the connector type on the steering gear has changed from Gen 2 to Gen 3.
Basically, a Gen 3 should have been installed by 2009, but that wasn't the case.
Even when using VCDS to perform the basic settings for the steering gear or steering angle sensor, an information field appears. If it's a Gen 2, then it needs to be set in 03 (Brake Electronics). If it's a Gen 3, then it needs to be set in 44 (Steering Assistance). Exception: If converting from Gen 2 to Gen 3, the default steering angle sensor setting must still be performed in 03.
Believe me, I would have preferred to implement a plug-and-play solution, but I definitely didn't want to install a used one where there was a risk of it failing again.
Regarding the coding of the parking brake control device - there is no coding option available; only the adjustment channels can be changed. So far, everything seems to be correct, as the internal steering angle sensor also needs to be deactivated here, so that it can continue to listen to the steering angle sensor on the steering column.
Initially, I overlooked this and the corresponding error message for the steering angle sensor was not or incorrectly displayed.
I have checked all the adjustment channels and found the information that the LWS (Load Weight Sensor) in the steering assistance STG (System Technical Group) must be deactivated.
My current suspicion is that the extended ID in the control unit for the steering assistance system also stores the engine code, or "flashes" it â it shows "ABE", but I have installed "BUD" â could a faulty setting here be causing the communication error?
Has anyone already had experience flashing the steering assistance control unit without the original VW ODIS?

Hello,
It seems that the removal of the Gen. 2 steering gear has not been fully incorporated into the repair documentation. Maybe there's more information in the vehicle-specific service information or TPI's (Erwin, a paid but not too expensive access for your problem).
Does your cable replacement match the adapter replacement?
Also, check out "mk5 golf steering rack replacement" with Gockel too. In the forum mk5golfgti.co.uk, the conversion appears to be complete, except for the adjustment of the response profile.

Hello Herbert,
I hope you haven't misunderstood, I didn't want to be presumptuous, but as I said, if there had been a new Gen 2, exactly the same thing would have come back into my vehicle.
I'm already familiar with this post and have moved further ahead â flashing the steering control line only starts with Gen3, and that's the only "advantage," which I've also already done and tried several profiles to rule out the possibility that this is the source of the error.
I also took care of the internal G85 issue right at the beginning.
I'm running out of ideas - however, you can never rule out the possibility that a replacement part could also have a defect.

The topic of replacing the steering gear: Gen. 2 to Gen. 3, is likely definitively clarified.
If that's okay, my suggestion: I would try to narrow down the problem to the three STG's listed in the car scan overview: 03-Brake electronics, 04-Steering angle sensor, and 44-Steering assist.
- 03-Brake Electronics: Are the wheel speeds visible and plausible, is a steering angle visible and plausible? Can the ABS be programmed?
- 04-Steering Angle Sensor: must be present in STG 04, and is it selectable in the STG selection? In my case (A4 8K), it also appears in the vehicle scan. However, I don't have the configuration (installation) information available.
- 44-Steering Aid: Is a steering angle visible and plausible, and is it locked?

In the 03 Bremselektronik, all 4 speed sensors are plausible and provide appropriate values - the G85 sensor as well. I just verified this again during a test drive.
04 is present in the car scan, but I cannot access the STG (Engine Control Unit) directly. This means I cannot see the code or make adjustments directly.
44 Steering Assist, also the values are also displayed plausibly -> I have covered the same distance twice and the values match so far. In the steering assistance system for the G85, the value in the steering angle sensor (internally in the steering gear) is likely not relevant, as the steering angle sensor has been deactivated via adjustment.
0 = active
1 = inactive
2 = inactive (only ABS T70 or similar)
I've gone through all 3 variations, and in my case, "1" should be the correct answer.
Thanks for your input anyway.
I will now check the parts list for this mysterious steering angle sensor to see if it is actually a "control unit" or just a sensor itself, although I suspect the latter. The fact that I am getting a plausible value in 03 would also indicate that the part is okay.
