Hey everyone,
I installed new shock absorbers on my Audi 80 Avant, both front and rear. Additionally, we also installed new strut mounts and tie rod ends at the same time.
Unfortunately, it seems that the springs sometimes make a loud cracking noise when maneuvering and going over bumps or uneven surfaces, and I believe it's the springs themselves that are causing the noise.
The old shocks were fine. Also, the springs are properly seated in their guides and are at their maximum compression.
What can I do now?
I'm really annoyed.
Thank you very much.
Regards,
Sausage blinkers.

Hi,
I'm experiencing the exact same problem, and I haven't found a solution yet.
There was already a tip about this in the forum.

Hello,
Unfortunately, I can't find the original thread, but the problem back then was that the suspension springs were twisting inwards during steering, which then resulted in a loud cracking sound.
to be solved eventually.

Hello,
That just means my strut mount is simply bad. I also bought it from a parts supplier. If I now install an original Audi strut mount, will that eliminate the noise?
It would be worth a try.
@Lucas
That seems like a solution, though, doesn't it?
I'd like to find out how much Audi charges for strut mounts.
According to the article, a dome bearing is an axial roller bearing, right? I didn't know that.
Best regards,

Hi there,
'That's what happened to me! I'm going to take a picture of a similar setup tonight when I get home and post it here. Maybe it will help you too! I definitely had this problem with two VW Passats. In one case, I replaced the complete strut assemblies from a parts store with the original parts, and in the other case, I replaced the strut assemblies from the parts store with the old strut assemblies but with a new axial roller bearing, and the annoying cracking disappeared completely.'
The dome lag is not an axial roller bearing! A component *of* the dome lag *is* an axial roller bearing! In other words, the entire dome lag consists of, among other things, a rubber block and an axial roller bearing inside it! Sorry, I expressed myself a bit awkwardly in that thread!

Hi Joergs,
Okay, that makes sense now, I was wondering about that. However, if I recall correctly, the strut mount seemed to be a complete unit, so you couldn't take it apart.
I'm going to go to Audi now and check it out.
Fortunately, you can replace the strut mount without having to remove the entire shock absorber, so the job should be fairly quick.
I still find it outrageous that they sell such poor-quality strut mounts. I will definitely try to return them.
Thank you very much.

Hi,
Audi wants 21 euros plus something extra for a strut mount.
But I think I will do it.
If it didn't achieve anything, then it's clear who will be blamed .

Okay, here are some pictures of the 'troublemaker.'
As you can easily see, the spring plate is firmly connected to the rubber. The piston rod of the damper rests on the axial groove bearing. When turning the steering wheel, the piston rod is guided by the axial groove bearing, which is great. However, because the spring plate is rigidly connected to the rubber, the spring coils have to absorb the rotational movements. Eventually, the force of the spring is no longer sufficient, and the spring plate snaps back to its original position with a loud cracking sound.
'The original VW shock absorbers are constructed differently: the coil spring rests on the piston rod on one side and on the axial groove bearing on the other. When steering, the piston rod and coil spring rotate on the bearing, which prevents any tensioning of the spring!'
