Hi, I'm having the following problem: I have an A3 TDI (ALH), 90 hp, manufactured in March 2001, which was originally delivered with the longlife service interval. I performed my first longlife service at 45,000 km and reset the service interval display according to the A3 manual via the instrument cluster. Everything was fine – i.e., after the reset, the display showed 15,000 km remaining, and after driving 500 km, the display switched to the longlife interval (less than 50,000 km). Now I have 90,000 km and I've performed my second longlife service and reset it again via the instrument cluster. However, after 500 km, the service display didn't switch to the longlife interval, but remained at the fixed 15,000 km interval (display shows 14,500 km). I tried the whole process again, and the display still doesn't switch to the longlife interval, but remains at the fixed interval. Does anyone have any advice? The type of oil used remained the same: Castrol SLX II Longlife. P.S. I don't have a VAG Com or anything similar. Is it possible to reset the interval to longlife again via the instrument cluster? Thank you very much.

Normally, the Longlife service reverts to fixed 15,000-mile intervals when you reset it via the dashboard. The new Longlife service can only be configured using VCDS (Vagcom) or by a workshop (using devices like VAS 5052, etc.).
You probably need to take it to the workshop so they can reprogram it correctly.

I also reset it to 'Longlife' using the combined instrument after 45,000 km, and it switched to the Longlife setting.

It's not normally designed to work that way. Using the dashboard = fixed interval, using a service device = longlife interval.

Why? The type of service interval (fixed/longlife) is programmed or stored in the engine control unit.
The combination instrument only resets the service indicator, but it doesn't reprogram the type of service interval. My car was originally delivered with the long-life programming. The first reset was performed at 45,000 km, and the second reset at 90,000 km. As far as I know, you can't reprogram the type of service interval (in the control unit) using the combination instrument; you can only reset it. Does anyone know more about this?
Best regards.

Is it possible to tell from the instrument cluster whether the longlife service interval is active or not?
Or, in the scenario described by mickdoohan, is a fixed value of 45,000 km (distance traveled) simply displayed, indicating when the next service is due?

Best regards, Rainer.

It is permanently recorded in the adaptation channels.
I might test it out with a tachograph delay sometime.

I'm not sure if you can see that information on Audi vehicles (like, for example, the remaining service interval).
In other VAG vehicles, you can't even query the remaining service interval.

So, normally, when you look at the Tahoe, you wouldn't notice it.

'In Audis, the remaining service interval is displayed, and this countdown works in reverse with the mileage. If the service interval reminder is deactivated, it will only appear 1000-2000 km before the service is due; otherwise, you won't see anything.'

Of course, you can check on your Audi whether the longlife service interval is programmed, and you can also see the remaining mileage until the next service. This works with the ignition on (after completing AUTOCHECK, or while idling, or while driving up to about 5 km/h) by briefly pressing the setting button for the digital clock.
