Hello,
Does anyone have experience with the Hella xenon (low beam) retrofit kits?
You can find all sorts of things on eBay.
It is claimed that 35W D2S bulbs are being used instead of the standard H7 bulbs, along with a ballast.
Are there any issues with the lighting or the TÜV (German technical inspection)?
To my knowledge, those cars are supposed to have headlight cleaning systems and automatic leveling.
Allegedly, the following is:
Confirmation from the German Federal Motor Vehicle Office (Kraftfahrtbundesamt) and Hella AG that no automatic headlight leveling system or headlight cleaning system needs to be retrofitted, along with a TÜV (German technical inspection authority) report. The original price was 690 EUR.
Can I access that safely?
Okay, here's the translation:
Thank you.
Ann.

Sure, if you don't care about the ABE (German approval certificate). Also, those xenon bulbs in standard H7 housings are blinding, like crazy. In plain English: Forget about it!
It's better to get Xenons from a car dismantler for your Golf 4; retrofitting them is quite simple. Retrofit adapters are also available, and if you need them, feel free to contact me via private message.
This certificate is nonsense; it's not valid and doesn't meet TÜV or police inspection requirements. For xenon headlights, you always need ALWR (low beam headlight alignment) and SWRA (steering wheel right/left alignment) on your vehicle!

Okay, just between us... I have a four-way connection with someone from home.
LEAVE IT!
First, something positive: The road illumination is excellent, very uniform, and has a good range.
Then there's the rest. If they shine in the snow, you'll need sunglasses because they're blindingly bright, and of course, there's no fog. Besides, these things don't get warm, so they'll just get covered in snow. Yes, yes, I know about headlight cleaning systems, but they have the same problem.
Okay, so here's the deal: In the first 3 months of owning the new car, I had to replace both headlights three times because they weren't just damp, they were practically like aquariums. After a year, the left headlight burned out. Then, after 14 months, the control unit on the right side failed. All of that was covered under warranty. Now, as of today (or so...), the front left parking light is broken. And to replace it, you need a whole toolbox. The control unit is still stuck behind the light, and you have to maneuver around the battery with long, thin fingers... I'm not a professional, not by a long shot. But I'm pretty confident in my abilities. It took me 50 minutes to figure out that the bulb had simply come loose from its socket (which wasn't visible from the outside).
and then the four turn signals...
So, I'm healed.
Matthias.

Okay, I haven't had the same experience. My Tiguan Highline also didn't have xenon headlights from the factory. I retrofitted them later, as the SWRA (Software Control Headlight Range Adjustment) was already installed.
The main difference is that the high beam is significantly brighter with Xenon headlights, as they now use H7 bulbs instead of the older H1 type.
The Xenon headlights really shine, especially on wet roads, and provide much better illumination. The turn signals are a matter of personal taste, but I grew to like them more and more over time.
Driving on snow with the Xenon headlights was a pure pleasure every winter.
It's only worth it if you get the parts from a recycling center. Buying new parts from VW is a waste of money.
'The side windows weren't leaky for me; I never had any problems with them. However, they were Hella products. Valeo products, on the other hand, tend to leak.'

Hi, mine are also from Hella and they are sealed now.
What I wrote wasn't that they don't shine well, please don't misunderstand. They are actually very good. I wrote that too. They are even great in snow. Unless the snow is falling very heavily from the sky. Then you might blind yourself. This certainly happens with H4 bulbs and similar ones as well, but often there are also fog lights that can be used instead of the low beam. Of course, it doesn't snow every day, but rather rarely.
I just wanted to say that I will never spend so much money on parts like that again. Believe me, it's not a good feeling when you have to go to work and everything is dark.

Hm, well, Xenon headlights aren't exactly a reinvention of light.
The glare caused by headlights decreases with Xenon bulbs because most German-made headlights use lenses that minimize stray light.
I used to have a sticker on my headlights that made them look aggressive... not because of the 'look,' but because I always had so much stray light reflecting vertically upwards in fog and rain that I regularly saw a 'wall' at the end of the hood. This 'smoked glass' look is also a fashion fad; the anti-glare discs were/are much better.
With the xenon headlights, I could safely leave that 'glare' directed towards the box because the wall no longer appeared.

Yes, with my Audi 100, type 43, may it rest in peace, I had painted the window deflectors from the inside with a marker pen for that very reason. Gruß Christian
