Hello everyone!
I recently bought a large heat exchanger from AHF/ASV at a good price to replace my AGR (small heat exchanger). This oil cooler is the VAG part with the number 028117021H.
I've now checked the parts catalog and see that all engines (AGR, ALH, AHF, ASV) have the same oil filter flange, but there was a change from part number 038115389 to 038115389B for a specific model year.
I'm now wondering what specific changes were made to the oil filter flange, and more importantly, whether these changes affect the compatibility of the part with other components. Does anyone happen to know more about this?
Wer kCan you help me?
Sure, I could simply unscrew my oil cooler and check it, but if it doesn't fit, I'll need a whole new set of gaskets again and have to start all over.
Thank you for your help.
Regards,
Alex. AUDI A3 1.9 TDI, EZ 12/96, ursprüglich MKB AGR, umgebaut zum AHF mit GT1749V-Lader, verkauft mit 250tkm

Hello, I've looked into this, and I think you can install the large oil cooler with the cover (part number 038117061) in your AGR.
The changes do not affect the flange to which you attach the oil cooler.

@mersente:
Thank you for your confirmation!

Did you have the part in your hand, or did you only have written documentation?
According to my opinion, the sealing surface on the flange where the O-ring sits should be perfectly flat and relatively wide. This is because the O-ring for the AGR oil cooler has an outer diameter of 59mm, while the one for the AHF/ASV has a diameter of 72.5mm.
Furthermore, the location of the flow holes is completely different. Therefore, as described above, the flange should have a relatively wide, flat rim and then a recess into which the oil channel leading to the engine block opens.
If the flange is constructed differently, it could cause significant problems.
Can you confirm or deny my reasoning?

As far as I can tell, the same flange is used for the AGR and ASV, AHL, and AHF components.
The letter change refers to a different modification that has nothing to do with the oil cooler.
I haven't seen it in person, so I don't have it physically, but I'm certain that the same oil filter modules were used with different part numbers.

hi
I also bought a larger oil-water heat exchanger from AFN (110 hp).
Now, the question arose for me whether the plastic insert that comes originally installed in the coolant flow passages of the radiator needs to remain there when buying a new one.
This plastic insert seals each bore hole from both the top and the bottom.
'Thank you.'

Hello Addi!
Yes, this plastic insert is absolutely necessary to ensure that the oil actually flows through the heat exchanger. Removing it creates a short circuit between the inlet and outlet, rendering the heat exchanger practically ineffective.
Regards,
Alex.
P.S. What is the part number for the AFN's water pump? AUDI A3 1.9 TDI, EZ 12/96, ursprüglich MKB AGR, umgebaut zum AHF mit GT1749V-Lader, verkauft mit 250tkm
