Hi forum.
I tried searching for information about engine replacement using the search function, but I couldn't find anything.
I bought a Golf III 1.8 (ADZ) from 1994, and now I want to replace the engine.
But it's not just the motor; it's also the transmission, radiator, engine control unit, rear brakes, front brakes, and master cylinder...
I'm looking for a vehicle on Autoscout that has been involved in an accident, and hopefully, I can find most of the parts I need.
But is it an impossible project? Has anyone created a list of potential problems?
Best regards,
Jakob - I also want to drive a TDI .
(The price of a Golf 3 Variant TDI in Denmark is completely ridiculous... Approximately 16000 EUR , because the 1.8 costs 'only' about half of that, around 8000 EUR.)

Hi Jakob,
'I can bring you a Volkswagen Golf 3 Variant with air conditioning and a TDI engine to Denmark for 12,500 euros. Would that be of interest?'
I assume those '0's are extra and shouldn't be there. Therefore, you have a difference of 800 euros between the 1.8 and the TDI. It won't be easy to keep the costs below 800 euros for such a conversion. We've already converted a TDI into a Golf 3 gasoline engine – it's more work than you think. It's better to save up and buy a Golf TDI directly.

arne

Hi Arne.
The '0' values listed are correct. He means that these are vehicles that are *not* accident-damaged, but rather undamaged. Because he saves approximately 8000 EUR when buying the gasoline-powered car, he wants to use that savings to finance the conversion and still have money left over. That's what he meant. They have an absolutely outrageous 'fairytale tax' of 25% there. In addition to that, depending on the price of the vehicle, there are also taxes of 105-180% (yes, that's correct!) for registering the vehicle.
For example, you would pay for a Golf V (the list price, depending on the equipment, is approximately 20,000 EUR + VAT), which totals around 46,000 EUR (20,000 + 5,000 VAT + 21,000 registration tax).
It's amazing that there are even cars driving there...
Regards,
Hermann.

...and that's exactly why I did the renovation!
"I'm also from Denmark and I installed a 1Z engine in my car. This saves me a whopping 7000 euros compared to buying a used TDI of the same year (and my car is over 10 years old)."
There are a few companies that specialize in sourcing TDI-engine cars from Germany that have been involved in accidents, and then installing the engines into Danish gasoline-powered cars.
The problem is that the state naturally wants to prevent such things, and so people are operating more or less illegally.
@palmstrollo: We also pay 50% in income taxes in Denmark, so the actual price is even higher .
@Jacobkoester: If you need any tips, just let me know.

Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English.
I think I'm going to faint. This is unbelievable...
Wenn das kein verfrühter Aprilscherz ist, dann solltest Du umbauen. What's up?
Feel free to reach out if you need any information or advice.
The ADZ is a 1.8L engine with 90 horsepower, which means you probably don't need to worry about the brakes.
You might need to swap them, as the TDI likely also has 90 horsepower. You can probably keep the cooling system as is.

The radiator for the 1Z engine is larger than those for the gasoline engines, and the front brake rotors are also larger (256mm instead of 239mm). They probably don't need to be replaced, but it makes sourcing spare parts easier because then everything would be from the 1Z.
Is there any other major problem with exchanging the items? It's just a lot of work.
