What is being programmed at the WFS?

In the WFS (Whole Vehicle System) process, are the keys programmed to the control unit, or is the control unit programmed to the keys? Can you replace a control unit if it has already been programmed, or does it always have to be reprogrammed?

And if the control unit is replaced, the new one needs to "learn" again which keys are the correct ones!

That means I can create a control unit with chips, keep the original one, and swap them, after the second control unit has been properly programmed.

The keys are learned by the immobilizer control unit. This unit is either a separate component or integrated into the instrument cluster. Therefore, the process of learning keys has nothing to do with the engine control unit. The engine control unit needs to be adapted to the immobilizer control unit.

I don't know. It might work if it's still using 'fixed code' keys, but probably not with 'rolling code' keys. With 'rolling code' keys, the code changes with each use, and the immobilizer control unit also stores the next code. You just have to try it.

I would rather have a VAG-COM with me on the road.
