Hello everyone,
Unfortunately, I broke my exhaust system (on a Golf 3 TDI Variant). Specifically, the connecting pipe between the rear silencer (muffler) and the middle silencer broke right at the middle silencer.
It doesn't seem to be rusted or anything like that!
Well, now the ESD (electrostatic discharge) device is also hanging at a slight angle because it seems to be only attached at one point at the back, and otherwise is held in place by that connection.
Now the question is, should I have this welded or should I just buy a new MSD (manifold surface distributor)?
How long does it typically last when you're welding?
And if you're going to recommend a new car, which one should I buy, considering that I'll be needing/wanting to drive this car for quite some time?
Are there replacement exhaust pipes available with ABE (German approval) or other certifications?
Are the MSDs (Material Safety Data Sheets) from Remus and Co. any good?
Thank you in advance.

Since the pipes are inserted into the mufflers and welded to the inlet opening, the pipe is effectively broken.
My experience over the past 50 years tells me that any kind of welding, even with reinforcing plates, doesn't promise long-lasting durability. If it needs to last longer than a quarter of a year, the only solution is a new one.
Whether one stabilizes a poorly designed structure (e.g., an asymmetrical bracket) using reinforcing plates is a different question.
