Error Logging: When Does It Happen?

I had previously reported about my problem with the WFS in another post.
To reproduce the error, I 'start' the engine – and here I must point out – there is NO starter motor installed!

Does the error code '17978' appear even if I attempt to start the engine as described above, or does the engine need to actually turn over for the error to be triggered?

However, it could naturally happen that you then get a different error, something like "starter motor not turning" .

When the WFS (presumably a fuel management system) locks, the engine starts normally, runs for 1-2 seconds, and then shuts off again.

And exactly that scenario cannot be produced by the WFS if you don't have a starter motor!!

I just tried the 'ignition on/off -> read out' method, and it worked. So, it seems like the engine control unit (ECU) doesn't need the starter motor to function.
