Hello!!!

I'm having a problem with my AAZ! icon_confused.gif I have to glow the engine at least 3 times for it to start properly, otherwise it only runs on 2 cylinders, and the other 2 cylinders come on later! And all of this is accompanied by blue smoke. I was told that this could be due to the BOSCH glow plugs! Has anyone perhaps already gained experience with that icon_question.gif?
The engine is probably not the problem; it only has 30,000 km on it. The pump is also likely not the issue!
I would be very grateful for any advice! icon_lol.gif

Hi,

I'm not quite convinced about using glow plugs yet, given the current temperatures.
Have you ever taken a look at the 'Technical Articles' section?
Or did you simply try searching for information related to your problem? The technical articles describe how to check the glow plugs.

I am sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided link.

I've already checked the spark plugs; they actually work! I've also checked the compression, and that's okay too! The fuel injectors are also fine! It starts well when it's warm outside, but only has problems when it's cold. I'm completely stumped; I can't think of anything else it could be! I was just told to try replacing the spark plugs with NGK ones, and I'd like to get a second opinion before I do that.

I have already checked the candles, and they actually work!

how actually?
Does it function, including the controls?
If you remove the candles and then check something, that's only half the truth.
You didn't actually check the entire control system for the candles.

I can take another look! Maybe I'll find something after all!

If the terminals of the electrodes are exposed (with a nut), simply connect a voltmeter to each electrode while it is glowing.

Around 10V should be present everywhere.

Why do I immediately think of the crankshaft bolt when I see the AAZ icon_wink.gif? Can someone explain that to me ?

When I installed the new engine, I used the stronger bolt. Additionally, it has a TDI crankshaft with the half-moon alignment, which provides more security against twisting.

Hello everyone,

Last week, I was really stumped by the same starting problems with my Ibiza (230,000 km). The engine wouldn't start in the morning, when the temperature was around 20 degrees Celsius (in the garage), and it would only start after about 2 seconds. The next night, I left it outside, which was 10 degrees colder. The following morning, I had to crank it for about 10 seconds before the engine reached 950 RPM. Otherwise, when it was warm, it ran as usual.
While troubleshooting, I came across your posts. So, I turned the engine back on and, using a flashlight, shone it on the 'tower' of the three pulleys. I could already see an imbalance of about 3 mm. So, I turned the engine off and had it towed to my trusted mechanic. He was almost able to unscrew the crankshaft screw by hand. The crankshaft already showed clear signs of the loose screw. Strangely enough, a 12.9 grade bolt was installed, but it was still loose. But what's the point, it will be discovered eventually.
The end face of the shaft was re-milled by hand using a specialized tool, and a new timing pulley with belt and tensioner was installed. Along with some other minor repairs, the total cost was 450 euros. I think it's an unnecessary expense, but it's better than a forced free runner.

Bertil, thank you very much for your advice regarding KWS.

Regards,
Markus.
