hi
I hope someone can help me. I'm having the following problem. I was driving at about 60 km/h, and the air conditioning was on. Suddenly, there was a loss of power for about 2-5 seconds. Then, the A/C relay clicked, and after another 20 seconds, there was a smell of burnt rubber in the car. I pulled over, and it was smoking like crazy from the belt area. I turned off the engine, and the ADAC (German equivalent of AAA) towed me home. The next morning, I started the engine, and everything seemed okay. However, the air conditioning won't turn on. There's no power to it. Then, I removed the A/C compressor. Now, it's here, and I was wondering if there's any way to test it. I don't want to just buy a new one blindly; it costs a lot of money. I had the feeling that the compressor locked up icon_question.gif, but it does turn freely.Thank you in advance for your help.

Can the compressor be turned, or does only the pulley rotate? There's a magnetic coupling (or clutch) in between, after all.
You can connect the clutch with 12V, but what you're writing doesn't sound very encouraging at all. icon_confused.gif

hello gremlin,
'Thank you for the reply. The outer pulley can be turned freely, but the inner part is very difficult to turn by hand and only rotates with a lot of resistance, all without any power applied. I will test it with 12V today.'
Okay, Chris. Thanks.

hi
I once had the clutch tightened with 8 bar of pressure. It worked, but it's very difficult to turn by hand and it keeps getting stuck. The gas connections are open at the moment. Should the compressor rotate easily and smoothly when the clutch is engaged? I think so, right?
Okay, Chris. Thanks.

It shouldn't get stuck or feel extremely difficult to turn. Some resistance is normal (since you have to move the pistons and work against the valves), but it should rotate smoothly without any jerking or terrible noises.

If it actually ate something, you absolutely must thoroughly verschandeln the entire system by blowing it out, otherwise you'll have problems again very soon!

Thank you, Gremlin, for your response. I will let the guys at ATU know that they should thoroughly check the system.
Look, Chris.

What kind of compressor do you have, and in which car? Don't they usually have a clutch that disengages, making them ineffective or not?

hi
I didn't quite understand your question! It's a Passat 35i Pacific, manufactured in 1996, with a TDI engine (66 kW, 1Z motor). The compressor is a Sanden SD7V16 1100. I didn't fully understand the part about 'it's broken now.'
look, Chris.
