Hello everyone,

I just noticed a slight "clicking" play in the rear left wheel bearing of my car (disc brakes): it's approximately 1-1.5 mm of play at the tire. The wheel spins freely without any grinding noises or the like.
There is no comparable game available on the market.

Before I potentially kill off the scum cap in the next few days:
What common tool is best for removing them?
Is it even worth adjusting it, or would the bearing in the next possible position of the locking nut already be too tightly adjusted?

(This is my "first time" playing golf. icon_rolleyes.gif)

Hello,

You can actually remove the cap quite easily without damaging it by using a water pump pliers.
The simulation should yield some useful results.
You remove the shim and the locking nut, then adjust the clearance by positioning the nut that presses against the wheel bearing. After that, put the crown back on and insert the splint.
The spur gear is so finely meshed that the next tooth fits perfectly into place.

Regards,
*Mario*

Hi,
If it doesn't work with the water pump pliers, try hitting the edge of the grease cap from a diagonal angle with a plastic hammer.
Sometimes, a very wide flathead screwdriver can be helpful for levering when you've already made some progress.

But remember, Ulf, don't tighten it too much. The general rule is: rather too loose than too tight. It needs to have some play! Otherwise, it will soon be over.
Best regards, Lanz.
