Hi everyone, I have a question about my Passat 35i, model year 1996, with a 1.9 TDI engine (AFN, 110 hp). I think I might have a problem. Last week, the turbocharger failed after 174,000 km, making a loud hissing noise and causing a significant loss of power. I replaced it with a new one. Since I couldn't find anything suitable quickly, I installed a used turbocharger from a 1.9 TDI PD engine with 115 hp. It looks identical externally, but it has a slightly larger intake side and a larger wastegate (no play and spins freely). The VAG part number is the same, except for the last letter, which is 'R' instead of 'D'. After installing it, I carefully ran it in for 100 km (I didn't want to damage it). My question is: with the old turbocharger, I always heard a distinct whistling sound, even when the car was stationary. With the new turbocharger, I don't hear anything at all when the car is stationary, and during driving, the sound is normal, but quieter. The performance seems to be back to normal, but I haven't tried to see if it reaches its top speed yet.

What I installed or omitted before, I did the same after.
K&N Panel Filter + Performance Air Intake.
Tuning box with on/off switch.
exhaust system, catalytic converter removed, only pipe (sidepipe).
AGR valve deactivated.

Could it be that a new or refurbished charger simply doesn't run as fast as one that has already been used for several thousand kilometers, or do these devices tend to get louder over time?

Thank you in advance for your reply.
and a season free of blemishes.
Best regards,
THT

The sound of the whistles varies from one machine to another. We had a discussion about it before... you can search for information about it if you like.

By the way: Do you have a picture of your 35i? I can't really imagine what sidepipes would look like on a Passat!

Hi,

Whining noises usually occur when the drive shaft is not properly balanced, or when the buckets are slightly damaged.
Sometimes new chargers (make a slight) whistling sound, and sometimes they don't. As long as the noise isn't excessively loud, it's not an indication of a defect.

Best regards, Rainer.

hello

'I had actually gotten used to the whistling sound. I've been driving the car for 45,000 km, and it's been making that noise since the beginning, and now that the new turbocharger is installed, I miss it (I actually found it quite amusing). I would say the performance is the same as before; it just feels a bit more responsive, and the power lag I used to experience between 2500 and 3000 rpm is now gone. It's possible that the turbocharger was failing from the start, but I find it hard to believe that it lasted 45,000 km with my driving style.'

Regarding the sidepipes, I just wanted to mention that I shortened them and positioned them so that they extend to just in front of the rear tire on the left (driver's) side. This was to avoid having to buy an expensive aftermarket exhaust system, which wouldn't really offer any benefits other than requiring me to cut my nice bumper to allow the exhaust pipes to be visible.

'A friend of mine has the same car with a 1.9 90hp engine, and it also whistles loudly, and it's been like that for 110,000 km with a custom-built exhaust without a catalytic converter.'

Does anyone have any ideas on how to simulate the sound of a blow-off valve?
I have driven VR6 and G60 engines for years, and I need a little bit of engine noise to find my inner peace:)icon_smile.gificon_wink.gif
Have a good evening.
Best regards,
THT

Two comments on that:
1. Search function! A "pop-off" feature (its merits/demerits and implementation) has already been discussed here, and there are also other forums dedicated to that topic.
2. Forum rules by Rainer (available for review at "Terms and Conditions and FAQ"):
Quote:
Topics such as 'Christmas lights' in or on the car, noisy exhaust systems that annoy neighbors, F1 rear wings, and similar types of "tuner" modifications are not allowed here.

Regards,
Guste.

Okay... driving the ALH... the sound of the VTG adjusting sounds better than any blow-off valve.

Okay, so with my ALH Ibiza, I don't hear anything from the turbocharger... either your example is particularly loud, or there are significant differences in terms of noise between the manual Ibiza and the automatic Octavia.

Hi,

I agree with Ulf... the similarly designed ASV in the Ibiza is also completely silent in that regard.

Perhaps that's where the high weight comes from... insulation.

In the Octavia, the ALH and ASV are clearly audible... just as it should be icon_wink.gif.

You are absolutely right about the use of "gehören."

I still fondly remember the characteristic sounds of the turbocharger and exhaust from my R5 Alpine Turbo (1.4L indirect injection, 108 hp without intercooler).
Even at idle, it produced a restrained, raspy growl that "sport" exhaust enthusiasts would love today. It wasn't excessively loud, but it was convincing enough to suggest that there was real power potential, not just noise.

In addition to that, the clearly audible engine speed when accelerating, even with that raspy tone - it's just awesome. Driving close to guardrails with open windows in the summer, and playing with the accelerator a bit, almost guaranteed a constant auditory pleasure icon_razz.gif icon_twisted.gif.

Das Ding hatte übrigens hinter dem Lader nur 1 Endtopf, und ansonsten nur Rohre vom geschätzten Kaliber 50 - 60 mm, einschl. Endrohr.

But the often-discussed, and largely unsuccessful, search for the missing TDI turbocharger sound shows me that the chances of success are rather slim icon_sad.gif.
Therefore, I'm going to stop.

Switching to an Octavia just because of the turbocharger sound would be a bit excessive, even for me... Speaking of which, what's the turbocharger sound like in the ASZ-Octavia?

And switching to an Octavia just because of the turbocharger sound would be a bit too much, even for me... speaking of which, what can you hear about the turbocharger in the ASZ-Octi?

hm.. the Octavia, however, is just as heavy as your Polo when it comes to comfort icon_wink.gif.

The ASZ engine is very smooth in terms of its internal components, which is why (thanks to the faulty AGR valve) you can clearly hear the turbocharger starting to spool up from around 1200 rpm. When you accelerate, it really starts to whistle, and you can also hear the variable turbine geometry (VTG) adjusting in a very noticeable way.
It's best to drive both (ALH and ASV) with a light touch on the accelerator, around 1300-1500 RPM, as you pass Maullenfenn. That's when the young guys icon_wink.gif stare.
or, in push-back operation, starting from 2000 and decreasing.

icon_question.gif icon_question.gif icon_question.gif
According to the Skoda website, the ASZ Octavia weighs 1385 kg including the driver, which means it weighs 1310 kg when empty.

My Polo currently has a balanced unladen weight (average of two weighings) of 1183 kg.

Whether the 127 kg difference is appropriate for the size and equipment differences between the Polo and the Octi is something one could argue about - but I am primarily looking at it from the perspective of power-to-weight ratio icon_wink.gif.

Regarding the sound difference, it remains strange... but we have one ALH and one ASV Octavia (older model) each in our circle of friends and colleagues, also with faulty EGR systems.
I'll have to pay close attention at the next meetings...

Hello again,

Yesterday, we spent several hours test driving the ALH-swapped Octavia. It was first registered in August 2001 and has approximately 58,000 kilometers on the odometer.

I was sitting in the back.
You can only hear the charger if the window is open - it doesn't cause any jaw-dropping effects, but at least you can hear something.
It sounds like someone is constantly opening and closing a long zipper at varying speeds... (boah ey)
