Hello,

It's happening on Monday!
I'm going to take my Volkswagen Golf 3 TDI (AFN) to a tuner for tuning/chipping.
I have large injectors and a GT1749VA turbocharger installed.
Right now, I'm running with 1 bar of boost without any overboost and have approximately 125 horsepower.

On Monday, September 27th, 2004, I have an appointment at ******* in Rangendingen.
I chose Wendland for the following reasons:
- Excellent advice!
- From the conversation, it was clear that this man knows what he's talking about (he has experience!).
- My brother, who had a VR6 engine installed there, was very satisfied with Wendland's service.
- ******* has specialized in TDI in recent years.
- And the tuner is near me.

I will let you know how it went and what the final outcome was.

Regards,
DJ icon_biggrin.gif

Hopefully, they will exercise some restraint and avoid excessive boost pressure increases and earlier injection timings, all in the interest of maintaining the warranty.
Because the higher injection rate of the larger nozzles results in peak combustion pressures that are already higher than original, even with the standard software.

HI Ulf! icon_biggrin.gif

The tuner doesn't exaggerate the performance capabilities.
He even recommended that I not increase the horsepower by more than 150.
And the boost pressure won't be much higher than 1.3 bar.

Regards,
DJ.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

|----------------------|
Hello Diesel Tuners!
|----------------------|

Here, I'm sharing my personal experiences with a tuner who customized my car.

On September 27, 2004, I had an appointment with a well-known tuning specialist in Rangendingen.
I had scheduled this appointment approximately two months prior by phone. So far, only positive things have been said about this tuner.
He describes himself as reliable and experienced in the field of engine performance enhancements.

My vehicle is a 1997 Volkswagen Golf 3 with 126,000 km (approximately 78,000 miles) on the odometer, and its engine code is AFN.
Fuel injectors: Five-hole fuel injectors from a 110kW Caravelle, with a hole diameter of 0.216mm.
Turbocharger: GT1749VA from a Passat PD with 130 horsepower.

The fax.

In June, I contacted this tuner for the first time via fax.
This fax contained all my vehicle details and the specifications I had requested (tuning, approximate horsepower, etc.).
After waiting for a week with no response, I called.

The phone call.

Over the phone, they knew about my fax, but when they tried to send a reply by fax, it didn't work. *surprised look*
My fax machine is actually working fine!
Okay, I didn't think anything bad would happen, and I discussed everything that was in the fax with Mr. XXX again.
At that time, I only had the larger injectors installed (the ones from the T4 with 110 kW).
The tuner also recommended that I install a different (larger) turbocharger.
'Once I have it, I'll contact you again, and then we can schedule an appointment by phone for two weeks from now.'
So, the waiting time is 2 weeks.

The appointment request.

By the end of July, things were really taking off.
Three days later, of course, I immediately called and wanted to make an appointment.
I was told that it would be best if I contacted them again in October, as they would have more time then.
It's strange – someone said two weeks was enough time before, but now I'm supposed to wait almost three months and contact them again?!
I decided to go there in person and speak with the person who had also processed my fax.

In-person appearance.

So, I went there and spoke with the person who also knew about my fax.
I received a thorough consultation (they really took their time!), and I have an appointment scheduled for September 27, 2004.
I was also told that such a vote would result in the loss of funding, which is understandable.
Regarding the price, all that could be said was that the hourly rate is €90, and the vehicle will be adjusted for as long as necessary until everything is perfect.
It can range from €1000 to €2000.
I thought, 'He's an experienced tuner, he'll know what to do – it's worth the cost!'
So, the terms were set.

The appointment.

Finally, the time had come (I couldn't wait any longer icon_smile.gif).
On September 27, 2004, I went there again, and I was just as excited as the first time.
Okay, let's quickly go over everything again, and I'll ask when I can pick up the car and how long it will take.
The vote requires.
The tuner said he would need about 2 days, at most 3 days. He also said he would contact me when everything was finished.
I felt great and drove home with my girlfriend.

Waiting, waiting, waiting.

After waiting for almost two weeks, I was starting to get worried and called again to find out the exact status.
Over the phone, I was told that they are very busy and struggling to keep up with the workload.
I've been waiting for an appointment for 2 months, and then they schedule a meeting that should only take a maximum of 3 days, but...
I've been waiting for almost two weeks, and I still don't have my car!

I was a little annoyed, so I asked how much longer I would have to wait and said that I really needed the car back soon.
'In response, I received: So, if I agree to buy the car, I should pick it up right away, and we'll stick with the original software.'
At that moment, I knew that the reputable fine motor manufacturing company had an organizational problem.
I then added that I would like to have a vote as planned, because I knew that xxx is a good tuner.
A vote was only considered for him.
The tuner told me to get in touch again on Monday, and then we can see where things stand.

And I reported it on Monday, October 11th, 2004 (I haven't seen my car for 14 days now).
Mr. XXX said the car will be finished today, and I can pick it up at 6 PM.

The tension is rising.

On-site, time was taken to discuss the diagrams from the test bench and compare the before-and-after results.
The whole thing cost me exactly 1000 euros.
I was happy with the price and performance as advertised, and the tuner was also satisfied.
Everything fit perfectly!

The result.

Then we headed home.
First, it was carefully warmed up, and even with half throttle, you could tell that something was going to happen icon_smile.gif.
When my oil temperature was around 82 degrees Celsius, I briefly accelerated in 5th gear. The speedometer quickly shot up to 170 km/h.
War schon sehr beeindruckend. So lief der Wagen davor nicht mal im 3. Okay.
When I got home, I still had that goofy smile from the ride back *g*.
I am very satisfied with the result and can only recommend the tuner; you just have to be a little patient: 'Good things take time.' icon_smile.gif
Real power output of 156.4 horsepower and 349 Nm of torque, and most importantly, no more soot emissions than before!
I'm now curious to see how much fuel it consumes and how long my clutch will last, as it's still the original one.

CONCLUSION: You have to wait a little longer with this tuner compared to others, but it's worth it!

Regards,
Daniel.

Oh, I almost forgot:

I'm currently running at 1.3 bar and experiencing a slight overpressure, reaching a maximum of 1.4 bar.

I increased the boost pressure (LD) to 1.15 bar, but I'm getting overboost up to 1.5 bar when I accelerate.

Can the larger turbo that you described be installed without any problems? What needs to be changed?

I think the report is good! Thank you!

Hi Henrik,

The turbo fits perfectly without any modifications!
I was surprised too, but that's how it is!
You just need to rotate the compressor housing on the turbocharger so that it points upwards, simply by following the example of the VNT15.

Regards,
DJ.

'Sorry, one more question: Would the turbocharger from the 2.5L TDI engine also fit? I could get one of those cheaply.'

What about the VGT turbo? I currently have a fixed geometry turbo. If I install a VGT turbo, how are the variable geometry vanes controlled? Or do they adjust automatically?
Can I still install a VGT turbocharger on an AHU engine, or what electrical considerations should I keep in mind?

VTG Turbo doesn't fit your vehicle.

I drive an AFN.
In your case, you can't install the turbocharger!

I have another question:

My AHU has a control unit with the last two digits 'GG'.
The successor has a different number.

I'm quite sure that the individual control units have been eliminated in favor of a single control unit that manages the 1Z, AHU, and ALE engines.

My thought is this: if that were the case, then the engine control unit would be compatible with VGT turbochargers (since the ALE engine has VGT turbochargers).

Therefore, I could now obtain such a 'universal' control unit and install a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) on my vehicle (which is currently not possible because I have a fixed-geometry turbocharger). Do you have any thoughts on this?

I need to replace my turbocharger soon; it's making quite a loud humming noise. Today, I also removed the hose from the air filter and wiggled the shaft, and there's at least 1mm of play in all directions. Additionally, the inside of the air hose was coated with a thin layer of oil.

It still won't work that way. The VTG (variable turbine geometry) system uses vacuum pressure, while the wastegate uses positive pressure.

I'd say you have way too much money. All these symptoms are perfectly normal, especially the thing about the oil film – pretty much every TDI has that.

Regarding the control units: I can't imagine that there exists such a "universal" ECU that could be used to equally control both wing-in-ground effect (WG) and variable geometry (VTG).

Jan.

Hello Henrik, as far as I know, the ALE also doesn't have a VTG turbocharger. Based on your questions, I recommend studying the relevant technical articles about turbochargers and related posts on the topic.

Albrecht.

Hi Hendrik,

The ALE has a wastegate turbocharger and is a Euro3 compliant 1Z/AHU engine.

All 1Z and AHU models now have the GG STG (which replaces all previous versions), while the ALE models have the HD.

It just contains a different dataset (due to the EURO3 standard).

Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.
