Gearbox Removal: DIY or Professional?

I need to replace the clutch on my car. After about 205,000 miles (330,000 km), it's finally starting to wear out.
I would just like to know beforehand if it's possible to do this alone, or if you need help. How much does a gearbox weigh?
I have a garage with a pit. Is that enough, or is a lift essential?

From my experience, I can tell you that you definitely need at least one more person to help you. The gearbox is quite heavy. It's difficult to hold it up from below while trying to unscrew things from above.
We did it with three people, but it was still quite challenging.
"Grube" is enough.

The engine and transmission from a Volkswagen Golf 3 (1Z) weigh 173 kg, including all auxiliary components.
The transmission alone weighs approximately 40 kg (according to information provided by Volkswagen in an expert report).
The longitudinal transmission in the Audi 80 is significantly heavier and more difficult to handle than the transverse transmissions.
"However, I would recommend getting someone to help you (one person is enough). While the gearbox itself can be managed by one person in terms of weight, it's not easy to position it accurately on your own."

I once, many years ago (during my prime ), replaced the gearbox twice on my Golf 1, 1.6 GLD, without using a pit or lift, and I did it all by myself. The first time, I removed the old 4-speed gearbox because I didn't like the rough sound it made when I took my foot off the gas, or the dull whistling noise it produced. The new, used 4-speed gearbox was then okay; it made absolutely no noises.

A year later, I finally found a 5-speed gearbox with a longer ratio and got back under the car to install it.
I jacked up the front of the vehicle on both sides and supported the transmission with a hydraulic jack and a suitable support.
After removing the drive shafts, transmission bell housing, etc., I was able to slide the gearbox out sideways, then lower the jack and receive the gearbox.
As far as I can remember, I had already loosened the drive shaft screws from above before jacking up the car, so I wouldn't have to get under the car for too long.

I'm not sure if you can still make good money with the three-ball golf format, or if it would go smoothly. But I don't think much has changed about the way it's structured, right?
But of course, having four hands is more efficient and faster.
