Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if this belongs in this topic.
If not, this thread can be moved.

I will be moving to the USA at the end of June for at least 3 years.
I'm going to bring my golf clubs, but I need to prepare a bit.

The diesel fuel in the US is mostly quite contaminated, so I need to bring along a certain supply of diesel filters.
The same applies to oil filters, pollen filters, and air filters, as well as oil drain plugs. According to a friend, the latter are 'self-sealing' and should be replaced with every oil change.

I will switch to fixed oil change intervals shortly before the car is shipped, because due to the dusty air in New Mexico, the oil change should be done no later than every 10,000 km.

Do I have to buy everything from the 'friendly' (dealership), or are there any decent, cheaper alternatives?

I need:

- Fuel filters
- Lubricating oil filter.
- Air filter
- Pollen filter
- Bleed screws

I would appreciate some helpful suggestions.

Regards...

..... Kuhni!

"You can buy something like that, especially since it's a VW, from almost any automotive accessory store at a reasonable price. In fact, it's even cheaper at places like ATU."
However, are you sure you're saving money by shipping it? When I lived in Pittsburgh (for 1.5 years), I bought a really awful Chevy Metro for $300. Surprisingly, it didn't have many problems, and we drove it a long way. Afterwards, we even sold it for a handful of dollars.

The problem with the diesel quality in the US isn't the dirt, but rather the significantly lower cetane number, which means it can't be used in common-rail (PD) engines. Variable pumps (VP) are sold there, but I'm not clear on what changes have been made to them, or if any changes have been implemented. I only know from people I know that the supply of spare parts for VW in the US works smoothly, and that prices are reasonable (thanks to the favorable dollar exchange rate).

Oh, and one more thing, a new Golf doesn't cost a fortune there, and you can get a used one even cheaper, so I would think carefully about the shipping costs...

Matthias.

Hello,

Thanks for the tips!

The transportation costs are covered by my employer, so it doesn't cost me anything.
Within a radius of 80 miles, there are 2 VAG dealerships, but I wanted to do the oil changes myself.

'Vans are driven there, and I've already spoken to someone who drove his G4 TDI over there. However, it was a 1999 model without the longlife oil requirement.'
