hi,

I'm wondering if it's possible to activate the comfort blinker function of the newer models via software on a Golf manufactured in 2003. I only have the free VAG-Com version (which is enough to read error codes), using a simple interface (ELV). Or, if not with VAG-Com, can the VW workshop do it?
We are also experiencing issues with the hands-free system (original VW) in our Touran. There is no notification for incoming text messages, but everything works normally for phone calls... Should we take it to the workshop? Or could this be a software issue that can be resolved through programming?

No, there is no way to unlock it through software.
However, there is additional hardware that implements the extra function. One provider would be, for example, http://www.fis-box.de/b3-d.html.

Hello,
This 'part' might work, but I don't want it in the car in this 'condition'!
Best regards,
Günther.

Well, that part works in its current state. Unlocking it absolutely doesn't work on "older" vehicles (e.g., Golf IV) because there's nothing to unlock; the turn signal operates analogically, like in a VW Beetle (the one without turn signals), icon_smile.gif since it doesn't have a control unit.

Improve it first, then complain. Otherwise, it works perfectly and is significantly better than the original circuit, which quickly suffers from worn contacts with heavy use in city traffic (even that can be handled by this circuit).

Regarding the appearance... this is generally how it looks with this wiring technique, but it's not a problem as long as you solder very carefully and meticulously check each individual solder joint. Unlike VW (relay 109...), I actually did that when working on this circuit.

Best regards,

Jan.

www.jalt.de, then: Projects -> Comfort Turn Signals.
It's tiny, inexpensive, and works great! At €23 for a fully assembled unit including the enclosure, that's quite reasonable, isn't it?

Greetings.

Hello,
The part looks really good, and it probably didn't cost much more than the 'prototype' parts did.
Best regards,
Günther.

I didn't think the build quality was bad, especially considering the price.

Generally, I am rather critical of such extensions. Not only do these circuits require a constant voltage supply (up to 10 mA), but professional development also requires considerable effort, for example, regarding electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). I see this as hardly feasible for an individual. I'm also not comfortable with disconnecting the standard wiring. What does the approval certificate (ABE) say about this?

By the way, I know how the turn signal function works on our Polo, and I don't really miss it on the Golf. After two decades of driving experience, it has become so ingrained in my muscle memory that the automatic turn signal often annoys me more than it would be helpful.

But I have respect for the development work done by Jan, as well as by the aforementioned provider.

Hi,

If that thing from Jalt had existed back then, I wouldn't have bothered building it myself. It's not worth 20 euros because the time investment is much higher than that.

What I miss about Jalt is a separation function. If its circuit loses power or something goes wrong, then absolutely nothing works anymore. In addition, I have an isolation relay and self-diagnosis built in, which instantly resets the entire system to its original state in many possible error scenarios (including power outages).

Similarly, the device is only activated when certain conditions are met – for example, there must be something connected to the output, and the inputs must be set to a neutral state. Additionally, the microcontroller monitors the relays and detects if one fails to switch (which would be critical). In such a case, the device will also be deactivated.

The relay is designed such that, in the absence of power, it defaults to its original state.

I haven't measured the power consumption, but it should be negligible (it might be around 10mA).

Regarding the ABE (General Operating Permit)... we collected links in this forum some time ago, which I have now integrated into the technical article. Someone had previously inquired with TÜV (a German technical inspection organization) in another forum.

Best regards,

Jan.

Okay, my Jalt circuit is connected to the ignition power and it's working perfectly.

'So long.'

@ Mike

Do you still have the parking lights activated via the turn signal lever?

Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.

Hi.

I'm only about 99% sure (it's been a while), but my Jalt wiring also connects to the 'ignition plus' terminal, and the parking light function is working!

Hi,

Okay, the thing about the ignition plus is clear... it's not different for me, and why would it be?

The parking light is connected via separate contacts on the VAG turn signal switches, as can be seen from the wiring diagram. Therefore, the function of any potentially separated wires is not affected.

Of course, this only applies if the car has that feature, which isn't the case with my Ibiza. However, I'm not sure if this applies to other Ibizas, or if it's related to the EU import regulations.

Best regards,

Jan.
