Hello,

I have a GT17 turbocharger lying around, and there's a note attached that says the boost pressure is too high. What's wrong with it? Or can I just install it and enjoy more power? (I doubt it.)

If it was replaced by a "normal" workshop, there's a relatively good chance that it's not defective.

Your question "Does a larger turbocharger mean more power?" indicates that you don't fully understand the principles of turbocharger control and/or power control, or mixture formation in diesel engines. You can fill this knowledge gap by reading the correct technical articles, for example, here.

No, I'm not going to give you a link right now.

Well, it's clear that you can't achieve much with just the charger alone, but still, thanks for the reply...

Yes, it was installed by a 'regular' workshop. Is there a way to test if it still works (while it's installed)? Probably not, right?

Don't jump to conclusions and start attacking people for asking a seemingly simple question.

@1Z driver:

Please feed the SEARCH function with the following terms:

- Stuck VTG (Variable Torque Gear)
- VTG adjustment
- make VTG usable.
- Intake manifold pressure, control differential.

You'll be bombarded with posts!

I suspect the turbo was discontinued for that reason. With a little technical skill, you can disassemble it, clean the VTG mechanism, and you'll likely enjoy working on it, as long as you have a suitable engine to install it in.
It's not suitable for the 1Z because it has a wastegate turbocharger.

Regards,
Alex.

Sure, it's not meant to fit on my 1Z.
