Hi everyone,
Has anyone already swapped the 90hp 1Z engine for an 110hp AFN engine in a Golf 3, and if so, what needs to be changed?
Thank you.
Best, Frank.

Have you already analyzed the search results?
Please search for "1Z afn tausch" and read the following:

I did it.
The engine, transmission, and front axle were swapped. The wiring harness can stay; it's the same.
In short:
- Front gone.
- Remove the shock absorber.
- Loosen the front axle mounting bolts.
- Disconnect the exhaust system after the catalytic converter, brake lines, and steering wheel.
- Unplug.
- Pull the engine, including the transmission and front axle, forward.
The installation is reversed. You can insert the 90 HP exhaust into the 110 HP exhaust (it fits perfectly) and then weld it. This way, you don't need a new exhaust, because the end pipe has the same cross-section for both 90 and 110 HP models, so there's no point in installing the larger intermediate pipe. It won't make a difference. Mine reaches 198-201 km/h on its own, without needing to go downhill first.
Looking back, it wasn't actually that exciting if you completely took everything out of another car.

hi!
We have now replaced the AFN engine with the transmission, control unit, braking system, and front axle. It previously had the 1Z engine.
We left the wiring harness inside. The car now starts briefly, but then immediately shuts off again. It's probably due to the immobilizer. I was just trying to fix that with the 5051, but it didn't work because my control unit isn't responding.
Does anyone have any idea what's causing this? I think all the plugs are connected.
I also wanted to replace the WFS (Windshield Washer Fluid System) from the donor vehicle, but unfortunately, there isn't one there. At least, not behind the light switch.
We also installed my 1Z engine into the donor Golf, and it started right up.
It would be great if someone could help or has an idea of what to do.

'Could you please check the pin assignments on the connectors? We had a similar issue with a '96 Audi 100/A6 where the pin assignments were incorrect. We ended up combining two smaller connectors into a larger 'OBD' connector, adjusted the pin assignments, and that resolved the problem.'

Hey everyone!
Just a quick update...
Since my car is half a year too old and lacks the standard WFS (Wiring Harness System) introduced from 10/94 onwards, I'm currently replacing the wiring harnesses (I have to do everything twice so that the other car can continue running with my old 1Z engine).
'Now that we've got the wiring harness in place, I was planning to plug in the well-labeled connectors and that would be it. But after having to rewire the first three connectors from the donor car today, I just didn't feel like doing any more.'
This was my first time replacing a wiring harness... Was it easier than I expected, or is it always this difficult?!
Okay, my conclusion is: 'Yes to upgrading to AFN if you have a 1Z engine. No, if you have a WFS (Waste Heat System). Otherwise, it's a yes if you have some experience and are willing to put in a little time and effort.'
At least there's one good thing about it. I now also have climate control, electric windows, and fog lights.

Get yourself an MSG without WFS. Or have someone program it for you locally!
In my opinion, this is the best option, otherwise you'll need vehicle keys, an instrument cluster, and so on. } B.Eng (FH) u. KFZ Meister

Okay, the new MSG is good, but I was told by VW that the AFN engine wasn't available until the WFS system was standard equipment, meaning all AFN MSGs are waiting for a signal from the WFS. (That's how I understood it).
Well, modifying it was probably cheaper, but definitely a nerve-wracking process. I'm curious to see what happens next. I have to go to my lectures now.
I've also replaced everything... the ignition coil, the window/door/lock module, and EVERYTHING else that's connected to the wiring harness.
